Intel just released a new library for their RealSense cameras that allows the use of multiple cameras on a single computer.

https://github.com/IntelRealSense/librealsense

The RealSense R200 cameras cost about $100 each. The depth quality is sparser and not as far reaching as the Kinect V2. But since it uses stereo cameras to calculate depth (and not structured light), there should be no interference between cameras.

From what I can tell the performance per USB 3.0 Bus is: 8x Cameras @30fps, 4x Cameras @ 60fps, 2x-3x Cameras @ 90fps.

I think this would be a fantastic and versatile addition to ipisoft.

Hello,

A couple weeks ago we released closed beta version of iPi Recorder with support of Intel R200 Depth Cameras. Hopefully this version will become public soon.

But current implementation is based on official Intel SDK and thus supports only single R200 camera per computer.

Please note that it's developer version of the camera. End-user version will be build-in in some models of laptops.

To say the least, the depth map quality of R200 is poor even in comparison with Kinect V1 / PrimeSense / Xtion. Also R200 is very sensitive to type and color of surfaces (including clothing). When using at regular office or home, and with regular clothes, has very high depth noise in many cases. This is especially critical at distances to sensor over 2 meters.

It's true, but even two Kinect V1 sensors with mutual interference have better depth map quality...

Please note that:
  • 90fps is not practically usable.
  • USB-cable of dev R200 is very short, and sensor does not work via passive USB 3.0 extension cable.
