Hello all!

What is better for quality - two ASUS Xtion PRO Sensors or two Kinect Sensors?
PS: what's the difference for work between Kinect PC and Kinect XBOX?

Thanks for answers! :)

Hello!
Please visit the following wiki page: http://wiki.ipisoft.com/ASUS_Xtion_vs_M ... Comparison
Shortly speaking, ASUS Xtions Live have advantage over MS Kinects in dual-sensor configuration: sligtly lower interference with each other. But note that ASUS Xtions don't work with some USB controllers (especially USB 3.0 controllers).

Hi,

For me, the big difference is that the image control panel associated with Kinect for Windows has additional features that improve the quality of the RGB video. This means the video can look much better in low lighting situations, like when I'm shooting in our living room at night. Here's an example in the first part of this video:

'Sister' Motion Test

This room is lit by a single light above the dining table behind the two Kinects but, as you can see in the corner previews, the room looks very well lit. Using Kinect for XBox, this same room is recorded very dark in the RGB channel.

So what does this mean? If you want to use the video for reference--finger positions for keyframing, for example--the better light sensitivity is helpful if you shoot in a dimly lit room like this one.

Also, it could be important because, unless I'm mistaken, the ground plane is calculated based on the RGB image. And in the future, iPi Mocap Studio will be using the RGB channels to extract additional information about the scene for enhancing tracking quality.

Another difference is the near mode available only in Kinect for Windows. iPi Mocap Studio does not use this feature but other 3D applications, like some face capture programs for example, do use it.

I haven't used the Asus device but one difference I like with the Kinect (Win or XBox versions,) is the motorized pitch control. I find this feature useful for lining up the devices remotely from another in the house room. That said, it's hard to argue against the Asus's lower IR interference with each other.

As for other differences, try a search in the forums--this topic was discussed in detail fairly recently.

Hope this helps.

G.
