ipi-soft-announces-ipi-motion-capture-2-0

Wow, this is very exciting! I can't wait to get my hands on this upgrade. We've already started recording for the next Brudders movie but maybe I can look forward to using 2.0 for the movie we're working on after that. :)

I have a question: are there advantages to using the new Windows Kinect and the Kinect clone in iPi 2.0 over using the current XBox Kinect? Just wondering if I should plan on upgrading my gear after the release.

Nice to see females, hand and head tracking though i'd like to trial these first to see if the upgrade is worth it.

On that subject, i'm also a little disappointed in the pricing strategy so far.

I bought DMC 1.0 when there was a single product and it was listed as being at a discount price of $995 (buy soon, it will go up) only it never went up! Instead, 2 more budget editions were introduced. Thus attracting early adopters by bait and switch and then now asking for just shy of another $500 to add features that were also going to hopefully be offered in version 1!

The 60% discount is diminished when the new standard price is higher so it's pretty much a 50% uplift on the previous one.

Waiting would have proven to be the better option, so much for loyalty.

This is just my opinion:

I've been using iPi DMC since its early beta testing days so I've probably been a supporter longer than most users here. The program has been very useful to me, especially in the past year, so I certainly don't mind paying for an upgrade. But even if I didn't want to upgrade, it's not like version 1.x will stop working after 2.0 is released. Version 1.x will still do what it was advertised to do when you paid for it.

When you buy 2.0, you will be paying for new features. I don't see a problem with that.

You're right Greenlaw, I have no argument with that, I just object to bait and switch sales. Advertising that the original price of 995 was an introductory price that would go up when the opposite happened, introduction of two other products and then a 50% uplift for an upgrade.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. If you are a recent purchaser who paid the full $995 price, the $478* fee to upgrade puts the total spent to almost $200 more than the new $1195 price. FWIW, the upgrade is free for 1.x users who purchased in the last 90 days, but if you purchased just before that period...hmm...I agree, that could seem a little unfair. Maybe that cut-off date should be extended or maybe the upgrade fee should be the difference in price for some users.

I have no say in this but you are a recent purchaser who falls just outside the 90 day cutoff, maybe you could make an appeal for one of the above options...but that's their call of course. (Remember, these guys need to make money too.)

*I think that's the upgrade fee for users of iPi DMC Standard 1.x who fall outside the 90 day period. Maybe iPi can confirm this.

This is very exciting though I wish they upgraded v1 and just charged for the upgrades the users want.

All that said, iPi DMC is still a great bargain compared to other 'entry-level' motion capture systems. Version 2.0 will be even more so.

I just wish Ipisoft would be more specific about the new features, especially the head and hands, multiple persons and props tracking. As of now, there is no possibility to track the hands and the head. Does "improved accuracy" mean that hands and head (and multiple characters) tracking will be, in actuality, possible? Please say it will be so! If yes, then version 2.0 will be entirely worth the upgrade price, IMO.
