Stupid question?
Which direction will the software go after gets harder and harder to find PS3 Eyes for iPiSoft?
Said earlier wasn't interested in looking into Kinect 2's.
Personally still think gyro transmitters instead of video is a better route if can find cheap alternative.

Good question--I've wondered that myself.

I imagine the PS3 Eye camera will be around for a while or replaced with a newer model before it goes away. I guess if it does disappear, new users will need to find an alternative web camera but I'm not currently aware of another web/video camera more optimal then the PS3 Eye for iPi MS2.

Then there's the aftermarket--someone will make a PS3 Eye clone for a while, if Sony ever drops it.

The PS3 Eye is cheap and easy to find, has a decent frame rate (60 fps) and good image resolution, consistent video quality and iPi Mocap Studio is directly compatible with it. In general, it's a great value and an optimal tool for the mocap system intended 'for the masses'--that is, the cameras work reliably with a wide range of desktop systems.

My only other experience with iPi and another web camera was in the early days with the Logitech cameras, and I have to say the quality control was not as good with the Logitech cameras--the cameras were not nearly as consistent in image quality, and they needed to be individually adjusted using separate controls for each camera. What a pain in the butt that was! Plus, they were very expensive (about $80 each.) When the PS3 Eye came along, it was a god-send because the device was quite literally plug-and-play--no special adjustments needed, they just worked! And, they are still very cheap ($18 or less.)

Sure you can find better cameras with higher frame rates and resolution but then you're facing higher prices and so much data that few computers can support them.

I'm not sure what else is available now that matches all the strengths of the PS3 Eye described above.

We will spend more time and effort updating our software to support other cameras, like webcams. Many modern webcams have good capabilities like 60 fps frame rate.

We never said anything like that. Moreover, we mentioned many times that support for Kinect 2 was in our plans. Right now we are waiting for Microsoft to ship our pre-ordered dev kits for Kinect 2.

Gyro sensors are still very expensive, despite the fact that their components are very cheap. We'll see if this changes in the future. By the way, gyro sensors do not require any complex software, that means you won't need iPi Mocap Studio to work with them.

I have worried about that myself. I've been using the Ps3 eyecams ever since I started using Ipisoft, and they are terrific.
Now with the advent of the ps4 will Sony continue to manufacture the PS3 accessories, who knows? To my knowledge they
did not with the ps2. I'm currently using a 6 camera set up and while I am very careful with equipment accidents will happen.
I have my cameras mounted on Lightstands, and I use sandbags to secure them once I have set them up and recording. Simply
put I am a little paranoid about one of the cameras getting broken, so, I have stockpiled a few. The cost of the cameras
if you buy them from used are about 10 bucks, so I have a box with 6 spares just in case, at that price a little insurance is
worth the piece of mind!

Carmine 1.09 is not intended for full body capture, it's a short range device designed for face capture or small/near object scanning. In other words, it's unsuitable for use with iPi Mocap Studio 2.

What you want is Carmine 1.08.

A little more info: If you only intend to use Carmine 1.08 for full body motion capture, the results will be higher than with Kinect for Windows. (The data is less noisy, from what I've been told.)

However, if you also want to do close up scanning (i.e., face capture or small object scanning), you will also need to buy Carmine 1.09, which of course doubles the cost. Kinect for Windows, on the other hand, has 'near mode' built-in, which gives you the option to do face capture and close object scanning in addition for full body capture. However, the quality may not be not as nice as with the combination of Carmine 1.08 plus 1.09.

So it basically comes down to what you want to do with the devices and how much you want to spend. IMO, getting two Kinect for Windows is a better value if you're on a budget and need to use the devices for multiple purposes.
