I finally found time to do a quick test at work today. My old duo-core laptop is able to capture from the Kinect just fine if I use an external the mini-RAID I built a few years ago for editing HD footage. The RAID is an eSATA device containing two 7200 rpm laptop drives. The interface is a eSATA ExpressCard. Nothing fancy but if anybody wants to know where to get the parts just let me know. That said, in my opinion, it's better to got with a modern SSD. These days an SSD will probably be cheaper now than building a RAID and you'll get better performance too.
When I got home I tried to track the data. Calibration was fully automatic and as far as I knew, it looked good, though maybe not as 'deep' as in the wiki images. I positioned, reshaped, posed the actor, clicked Refit Pose, and the rig appeared to fit in the capture data well. But when I clicked track forward, it tracked for about 3 frames and then the actor got blown away. Yikes! I guess Studio didn't like my acting very much. :)
I suspect my small office space was less than ideal. I was shooting into a corner and the walls were close to my hands. Also, there were shiny black computer cases on the floor which I think confused the depth sensor.
I'll try another test later this evening. I suspect I'll have better luck with a test captured in my living room, where there is a little more space and fewer 'obstacles'.
More later.
