Here is my Christmas wish. Add one Kinect to the standard version. So I have 1 Kinect and 6 PS2 cameras. Or better yet 2 Kinects, for two actors at the same time and the PS2 cameras resolves any confusion between the two actors motion BVH files output.

I'm SO sold.

I got a couple of PS3 cams, but the whole process was still a bit tedious and you need quite some space to set everything properly (stands, cables etc...)

The kinect solution seems much simpler and straightforward.

I believe Kinect can already track 2 people (maybe more) so that's already a plus.

We've seen that you can already combine two kinects without as much interference as one would have feared at first, and MS said they are likely to upgrade the firmware to enhance the resolution (Hands and finger maybe !!!).

Given their previous experience, IPI is certainly one of the best actors on the marker to provide a usable tool for animators and not a simple toy.

I would be most keen to do a follow up on the 3D world review about this new development once you are happy to present.

Can anyone tell me what's the latest on this as it seems to be evolving very quickly.. also what I really need to know is is the kinect solution going to be stand alone or will it be part of an update for Ipi dmc?

wow I'm glad ipisoft is getting some traffic in the forums from your teaser video. I too would like to have a small update on how this is intended to be integrated as I feel slightly burned by the switch to the ps3 cameras so soon after I bought my 4x logitech 9000's. Really all i want to know is if I should buy a second kinect (already own one) or finish buying the last 4x ps3 camera's that I need. Either way looks great compared to any other motion tracking with the kinect.

I think it comes down to what your mocap needs will be, how much space you have, and the capability of your equipment.

The Kinect tests shown are very impressive, but I still don't think it will be as precise as having multiple (four or more) PS3 cameras, mainly because you have far less spacial data to work with. For example, occlusion will still be a problem with the Kinect for complicated motions, even if two cameras are used. Also, the performance space will be pretty limited.

That said, the Kinect system will probably require less space to use and require less horsepower to operate, so if you need to capture in a small apartment you're probably much better off using the Kinect system.

Anyway, if you don't need full body mocap immediately, I would wait and see what iPi Express has to offer. But if you do need something right now (as of build 112) the PS3 camera version of iPi Studio is available now and it already produces excellent results. (I'm amazed by what I've been getting out of the new iPi DMC this past week...very solid, pro-quality data.)

This is just my opinion of course, and I could be very, very wrong about all this. :)

yeah I understand this but am intrigued with the possibility that ipisoft can somehow get two actors with kinect (single or multiple) and the precision of what they've achieved with the ps3 cams via some hybrid of the two or something. I'm going to guess either way having all six ps3 cams will not be a bad decision.... but I'm going to sit on it a bit as I don't quite need to do mocap again just quite yet. My first test was good way back when it first came out and know it has improved greatly since. Now my interests are in multi-actor and hand and/or face capture. I'm hoping this work on kinect proves beneficial for all tiers of their products.
