Post subject:  What are the primary causes of the frame dropping ?

Hello everyone in ipisoft,

What are the primary causes of the frame dropping ?
The spec of my computer is
“ I7 4790 3.6GHz
NV 1070 GPU
Mainboard Giga Z97-HD3
32GB ram
512GB SSD
three PCIE USB cards
three 10 meter active USB 3.0 extension cable with power supply
tree Azure Kinects”

I connected each Azure Kinect to each individual PCIE USB card with individual USB 3.0 controller. I record my video in WFOV with color mode with these three depth sensors. But I saw the red text which said that frame rate dropped to 20~22fps.
I don’t think it is necessary to record such high resolution in RGB color data in WFOV mode, why not use 720p instead ?

Is the RGB color data necessary in the tracking process ?

What are the primary causes of the frame dropping ?

Would you do me a favor give me some advice ? Thank you very much.

There are frame drops? this worries me. I used to have frame drops when testing kinect2, and gave up on it, and now only use PS3 cams which has been working great.

I hope you can find a solution to your frame drop problem with your three Azures because I am also considering getting 3 Azures to use it along with my Ps3 so that I can get faster tracking.

Possible causes of frame drops include:
  • Incompatible USB controllers. Intel and NEC USB 3.0 chips usually work best.
  • Low quality extension cables. Check whether frame drops appear when Kinects are connected directly to a PC.
  • CPU overloaded due to too much data. Check CPU load.
In any case try depth-only video mode - this will reduce data rate. Color is not needed for tracking.
Color is required for calibration though. However, calibration is more tolerant about frame drops. So you should be able to do successful calibration even while having frame drops.

There are frame drops in WFOV with RGB mode only. But the frame drops disppeared in other modes whether I used extension cables or not.
According to your answer I think I must turn off RGB in WFOV mode to keep the framerate full now.

Thanks for your help.

That's great to know. so with 3 Azure kinects, if you turn off rgb you the full 30fps at all times?
