Hi everybody! We're dealing with a huge amount of MoCap files right now. Now our Pipeline is facing the edge I guess. Having a lot of Files the animator always puts randomly the rigs into maya and decides then, what he can use. I was thinking it would be great to find a way to archive all the stuff you capture. So having a tool, that has a explorer with the all mocap files, including a preview you can watch and tags on the mocap files would be awesome. How do you guys manage a big amount of files, that the people you're working with have the option to find exactly what they are looking for. We deal a lot with CG doubles for crowds in the background. So right now I do a lot of different motions that are not signed for special scenes or shots. Is there a good way to get a mocap explorer with previews and a tag search function or something in that sense? Or some different solution? Thank you very much :)

iPi is a tool for motion capture, so we suppose that further work with captured animations is done in any third-party product. So we do not plan such features is our development roadmap.

When we shoot a mocap session, we log shot information into an openOffice spreadshee as we record each scene. Since Recorder automatically generates a filename with a timestamp, I just copy and paste this into the spreadsheet and enter a very brief description of of the motion. I also enter character name and the shot number for which the motion is intended. This document is then used for reference during tracking and editing, and final scene assembly.

Even better would be a database program specifically designed for this task. I haven't bothered to make one because our motions are project/scene specific and not really meant for future reuse, but creating a mocap database for this sort of thing isn't difficult.

For previewing mocap files, another user turned me onto this free program:

BVHViewer

The nice thing about this previewer is that it allows you to quickly browse a directory of files with an animated preview of the motions, without having to actually open the file.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for but maybe it will help get something going for now.

G.

If you are looking to preview fbx files you can use Autodesk's FBX Converter or their Quicktime plugin, both of which are free.

Hi, thanks for your help! Having a good fbx viewer is the first step. But I still didn't find a good way to get a explorer + a viewer + a search function. Would be awesome for the other artists. But I guess there has to be some programming? Didn't find something in that sense out there yet...
