Currently my setup includes ipi and Zign track 2 into poser. From Poser I use Anime Studio to generate alpha masks to import to Vue 5 as alpha planes. I have Carrara 7 and Bryce. What programs are you using? Dale |

My workflow for mocap animation is iPi Studio to Animeeple, and then Lightwave to Animeeple for my rig and character. Then, after retargeting the iPi mocap data to my rig, I export an FBX out of Animeeple back to Lightwave for final animation, lighting, and rendering. In Lightwave I've been using traditional IK-FK tools to edit the mocap, but I've started using a feature in Lightwave called IK Booster, which gives you some basic Motion Builder like capabilities. For simpler editing, I might use Animeeple before exporting for Lightwave. Other parts of my workflow: ToonBoom Storyboard for, well, storyboarding; Sony Vegas for animatic and editing; Eyeon Fusion for effects and compositing; Lighting for effects and animation; Modo for modeling, with some modeling in Lightwave; 3D Coat for texturing and sculpting; Headus UV Layout for making UV maps; Magpie Pro for lipsyncing; Vue 9 Infinite for environment and atmosphere. Previs is done in Lightwave and exported to Vue to help set things up there. I guess it goes without saying that I also use Photoshop a lot. Music and vocals for our current project was performed and recorded live using a Zoom H4 digital field recorder, but final mixing was done by my wife using Acid Pro 7 and Sound Forge Pro. All these bits and pieces move in and out of Fusion and Vegas until it's all done. Final editing is done in Vegas. Hmm. I guess I use a lot of programs. :) G. |

Man that a lot of different programs, some that are expensive. How is Vue 9I? Vue 5I is very buggy. I save often, never knowing when it will crash. I been thinking about upgrading but I'm getting a new bike and graphics card. The bike was 10g and the card I'm looking at is 1000. Dale |

Hi Dale, Many of the programs listed are the same as what I use at work so I try to maintain a personal license at home to keep up with new features as they come out. (I also make a lot of recommendations for work, so I keep pushing iPi Studio each time it gets a major feature.) :) As for Vue, we use it regularly at work. Prior to 8, we mainly used it for creating matte paintings, but with version 8.0-8.5 the program became pretty awesome for animation and elements for compositing. The renderer was much faster and the AA and flickering issues are pretty much gone. With 8.0 you could finally export clouds with alpha channels, and for Lightwave users, it finally recognized modern .lwo formats with UV maps. At work we use Vue 8 xStream. I think we recently got 9 but I'll have to check. At home I'm using Vue 9 Infinite. Here's a TV commercial we created recently that used Vue 8.5 xStream in Lightwave for all the environments: Most Dangerous Hunts 2011 The animation is keyframe and not mocap. We had a very small budget, schedule and crew to make this one. If we had the budget, we probably would have used mocap on this but our two animators did a great job considering the compressed schedule. So to answer your question, yes recent versions of Vue have been great! I'll be using Vue 9 Infinite this weekend, and I'm sure it will be even better than 8.5. G. P.S., this was the job that I did some 'proof of concept' previs tests for using iPi Studio. We didn't use the mocap for previs because the required action wound up being very different from what I recorded and tracked, but the test was otherwise successful. |
