I currently work for a very small independent studio. We have been using IpI successfully for a few months now (with the occasional head aches). We are currently diving into a new project, my supervisor has been leaning towards a mocap system 8x the cost of IpI, but since the drop of the ipi kinect video I have convinced him to hold off on the big purchase. Unfortunately like my supervisor the absence of a projected release date (unofficial) is a bit nerve wrecking to say the least. I would love to stay loyal to ipi as we have used this from the start, but it's getting harder to convince my supervisor to hold off on the switch seeing as how there is no time line to go off of. So what I'm trying to say is, any date even unofficial would be great, I'm sure we're not alone on this.

It sounds like your supervisor is looking to upgrade, so I was wondering, what leads you to believe the Kinect version will be of higher quality than the current PS3 Eye camera system?

It's my assumption that the Kinect version will be an 'entry level' product. Not that I know anything at all about iPi Soft's plans for the product. Just curious. :)

Also, I was wondering what 'headaches' you've been experiencing with the system. I've had plenty of headaches myself in the early days of iPi Studio, but ever since build 112 came out the PS3 Eye camera-based system has worked very well for me.

From the demo, the kinect versions seems to do a better job of tracking due to the "advanced" technology that recognizes distance of moving objects. To produce results as shown in the video from just one camera whether kinect or not is amazing.

Although more pricey, we found the Logitech Pro 9000 seems to work best for us as opposed to the PS3 Eye. Headaches are from typical problems, just a small studio dreaming big I guess. I'm one of those who feels more accomplished when producing under budget, but that's just me.

I'm surprised to hear that because I started out using four Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 cameras two years ago and switched to four PS3 Eye cameras when iPi began recommending them over the Logitech cameras last year.

Personally, I felt the Logitech cameras were too finicky to use (i.e., matching up the control panel setting was an absolute P.I.A.) By comparison, the PS3 cameras have been much easier to set up--quite literally plug-and-play and no need to fiddle with control panel settings even if such a panel existed for the PS3 Eye. Because of this, I'm able to start capturing with the PS3 Eye cameras much more quickly than I could using the Logitech cameras.

As for quality, I could never achieve anywhere near the PS3 Eye's resolution and speed (640 x 480 @ 60 fps) when using the Logitech cameras. As a result, my iPi motion capture is looking more professional now. (Admittedly, there are other reasons besides the PS3 Eye for getting superior results: the software has improved significantly this past year, I'm using a better computer and graphics card now, and I've gained a lot more experience than I had two years ago.)

As for the Kinect, I'm impressed by how quickly they got iPi DMC to work with it, but there are technical limitations (like inability to resolve occlusion) that may keep it from being as precise as four or more PS3 cameras. That said, it will be interesting to see how far iPi Software can push the Kinect...I don't doubt they have a few surprises in store us. :)

We solved issues with the Logitec Pro 9000 by uninstalling all software that came with it, including its control panel. All controls are done inside IpI Recorder. Once the exposure is dropped down a bit, we are able to capture 6 cameras, 640 x 480 @ 60 fps. Besides post cleaning and the occasional arm displacement, the results are practically flawless.

Cool. When I have time, I may have to bring out the Logitechs and check this out. Thanks for posting the info. :)

Hello Greenlaw & tonye_eb2!

Sorry for delay in replay. Right now we are in a hurry to release Kinect version in early February. Currently our main focus is robustness of tracking for Kinect. And we perform progress in this direction every day.

As to characteristics of Kinect version.
Pros:
* there is no need in large space, tripods, USB-cables, fast computers for recording, monochromatic clothing, complex camera setup and calibration
* easy to use
* for tested set of motions quality of tracking is comparable with 4 camera version (but we need to perform more tests with the latest version of algorithm)
Cons:
* capture volume is limited by 2x2 meters
* self-occlusion problem (one point of view) thus there is no actual 360-degree freedom
* tracking speed in current implementation is about speed of version for 3-4 cams

How it can be if according to official specification of Logitec Pro 9000 camera it supports only 30 fps?

Hi,

And have you a price for the kinect version.

I have bought the basic version last week. Is there a discount if I bought the kinect version?

Thank you.

We suppose that price should be in range $300 - $400. Of course we are going to offer significant discounts for users of Basic and Standard editions. Exact numbers are steel under discussion. First of all, we should produce more experiments with the latest algorithm to estimate quality of Kinect version.
