Post subject:  Will iPi DMC work with mounted Face-Cam-Helmet?

Hi,

we're just working on a workflow and hardware-setup for doing MoCap with minimal effort in a very small team.
To get most out of a recording-session and the actor's performance, we thought of capturing markers on the face of the actor with two mounted cameras on a helmet for seperate tracking WHILE tracking the rest of the body with iPi DMC to have full body MoCap with head tracking and face-capturing at the same time.

So the question is; will iPi DMC work properly, if the actor wears a helmet with two little camera-rigs attached? (If the answer is "It depends", where could those two cams be placed to not disturb the tracking process of iPi DMC?)
Has anyone done something like that before?

We want to use a 4x PS3 Eye-Cams - half-circle - setup for iPi DMC and two rig-mounted GoPro HDs for tracking face-markers with some matchmoving-software...

with kind regards
MountStone

The problem would be that your camera rig may interfere with iPi's ability to track the body motion. It really depends on how unobstructing the rig is.

IMO, you should do your facial capture in a separate face only session. The ideal time is to do this when the actor is recording dialog: you can do the face capture while you audio/video record the actor performing dialog as he watches previously recorded 'body' footage, ADR-style. This is a fairly common workflow even in high-end productions.

Hope this helps.
