Hi, I am using the kinect for the camera, in the instructions it says to calibrate the camera, I'm unsure as to how to use the kinect to take pictures for the calibration, can someone tell me how to make kinect take pictures?

Hi there :) I believe that the Kinect does not need calibration per-sey. Just make sure that the camera can see the floor plane and has about 2 to 3 seconds of recorded background - no movement. Then hop in the scene starting with a T-pose, do your motion, and end with a T-pose. However, I use the sony eyecams but plan on getting the Kinect soon. Hopefully someone who has more experience with the Kinect will hop on here and give you better advice :)

you do not need to calibrate anything. if you are using ipisoft with playstation cameras than yes you need to calibrate but for kinect, no. there is no need to take any pictures.
please read the manual, its your lifeline to understanding this amazing software!

Do you have read the wiki?

Two part Process:
You have the IPI recorder so it captures you and made a recording?

Next open the DMC
So now you have recorded someone with the kinect and now you want to render out the BVH.

Do you have 2 seconds without an actor?

Is the Floor plane in view? Lots of red dots on the bottom of the screen.

In DMC did you move you to where the actor is? And did you adjust the actor to match your height and T position?

Now render.

Hi Dale :)

The Kinect is pretty straight forward.

1) Plug it in to your computer, make sure the ground can be seen.
2) Record 2 - 3 seconds with no actor.
3) After the 3 seconds, stand in front of the camera. Make sure that it can see your entire body. Stand in a T Pose for about 2 seconds.
4) Act out your scene.
5) After you have acted the scene, end with another T Pose.
6) Import the video in IPI
7) Make sure that the character is in the same T Pose that you are.
8) Press Track Forward.

That should be it. If your CG character is jittery, then apply the Jitter Removal filter.

The Kinect is just plug and play.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for all of your replies! I had been going through the documentation, but did not see where it said that kinect did not require calibration, thank you so much for the help :)

The reason you do not need to calibrate the Kinect is because it uses a completely different technology. The Kinect camera is designed to read depth as to where the PS3 cameras cannot. We calibrate the PS3 cameras so that the system can read where in 3d space the cameras are at. You actually have a great setup with the Kinect. I can't wait to get one myself at some point. :)
