Post subject:  Please tell me which VIDEO CARD to buy. List on Wiki is old

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying Ipi Desktop Motion Capture and everything is clear on wiki about requirements, cameras, cards... etc.
However, list of recommended video cards is one year old...

Can You please share Your experience, and recommend me a video card.
I know that more GPU is better... but it is also written: "Professional GPUs like NVIDIA Quadro or ATI FireGL are not recommended due to high price and lack of performance advantage"

Please, help.

Thanks in advance,

Mladen

Any recent Nvidia GTX ### card after GTX 250 card should do well. I use a GTX 460 which is over a year old and it's excellent for iPi DMC. Nowadays you can pick one up for around $150. I think the most recent model is the GTX 590 which is significantly faster (and more expensive.)

To compare cards, just enter 'GTX [model number] Benchmark' in Google. This should turn up the most recent tests.

Here's my own comparison: when tracking PS3 Eye mocap in iPi Studio, my old GTX 250 took about 2 to 3 seconds per frame and the more recent GTX 460 takes about 0.67 second per frame. That's a HUGE improvement in speed.

Hope this helps.

Additional tips: When buying a card make sure the one you're looking at will fit in your computer case. Some of these cards are really large. An adequate power supply is another consideration.

My computer case is smaller than normal but I was able to find a GTX 460 model that was smaller and uses less power than most.

Beware that you might have to upgrade your power supply. If you have an old computer main board like mine you have no way of up grading to the newer power hungry video cards.
