Hi all,
I was wondering if your tools can be useful in recording and analyzing athletes performances during gymnastics training. The athlete surrounding environment is rather complex (exept floor exercises where the athlete doesn't deal with any particular apparatus, in this case the possible limitations should be the 13 square meters of the floor) because of the presence of the gymnastics apparatus like the uneven bars. Also, the velocity of the movements probably are critical issues for motion video capture.
Is there a chance to obtain good simulations in this field?

Thanks and regards,
Gigi

First, really the max. for PS Eye camera positioning is 7m x 7m at chest level, (less with the Kinects, but not even recommended for use), you can cover a bit more area with

higher positioned cameras, but the tracking will suffer at these distances most likely, so you would have to cut floor exercise perimeter down.

Simple answer is, probably not for very very fast motions of the hands feet or body, especially if recording long sessions, as you are describing.

Yes, for floor exercises with slower smoother movements without much floor contact from rolls or flips or full body contact with the floor.

Amount of cameras and positioning would be critical if you try, no less than 8 cameras would probably suffice, as I am sure there will be occlusion at many instances.

Camera calibration may give you issues, especially since the floor mats are somewhat "spongey" for some apparatuses and when feet contact the floor on landings, post-process

3D editing can adjust this though, if not too bad, or if someone wants to put in the time to do so, if very bad.

All you can do is attempt it for yourself to get the absolute answer for your needs and see if the results will work.

If you attempt it, it would be much better to break the videos up after recording as separate tracks during tracking process, or using the editing feature of the recorder

to shorter 30 sec. sections for better/easier tracking, (and make file size smaller), and then export as 1 track or blend each track back together in a 3D editor as 1 full

exercise animation. Your preferrence.

Would be best to do this in a "closed set" type of session, if attempted. no cameras can be bumped or interferred with after calibration.

Apparatuses in the gym won't be in the background, as long as all was there and never moved after background evaluation was done, if moved, a new BG eval. should be

performed. (This also means other people can not be moving around in the recording background).

May get some poor effects from colors in the surroundings though while tracking, as it seems it would be hard to change the surroundings in a gym setting.

30 fps from a Kinect or 60 fps from PS Eyes just isn't enough for that type of capturing and turn out smoothly, without a lot of post-processing work in my opinion,

I do track some high motion dance movements with good results, but I am pushing the system and things have to be just about perfect for acceptable standards of tracking.

But... give it a go with what you want to attempt, only real way to find out for your specific inquiry and personal knowledge.

I messed my posting settings up for a bit and didn't realize how old this posting was.

But... anyone that views it the reply still stands true in my opinion for such capturings.
