Hi, I'm Tom from CloDel Studios, and UDKLearning.com

I having been reading up on mocap for sometime now, and have read very much into iPi software. I like the idea of being able to do mocap here at home, without having to get a loan. From what I see, the 'main' users of this, use both the dual kinects as well as the 6 ps3 eye's. It seems if its a simple non complex anim, its easier to use the kinects based on the speed/ease/space of everything, and for more complex anims or bigger movements and scenes that the 6 ps3 eyes come more into play.

I have been toying with which setup to go with first, and seeing as my livingroom is roughly 13ft by 36ft, I'm leaning towards the ps3 eyes. Not sure if the layout will work for that very well yet, if not I will def go with the kinnects first. Either way, I'm planing to order the cameras and equip this Thurs or Fri when my taxes hit. I am very excited to playing around with this, and look forward to sharing my work with you all.

If your wondering why I'm wanting to do all this, well I like to write and work on games. I use UDK, and have been using it for over 2 years now. I am more of a MAYA user, and I like to use ZBrush as well. I have a few projects that I am working on, one of them being a personal project of mine, and another that is team based at udklearning.com. Over there, we get a group of users and teach them different aspects of game design. Part of what I'm about to teach, is animation. We make lots of tutorials on how to everything that we do, and I look forward to teaching how to do home mocap using the iPi software. I know I have a bit to learn as far as mocap goes, and getting used to ipi, but I am very much looking forward to it.

I think my rig should okay, cept I thinking that I could use a better hard drive since I plan to start with the 6 ps3 eyes and I remember reading about a faster hard drive for that. That is the only lacking area with my rig, but its basics are 16gb ram, i7 2600k, sli gtx 460's, gtx 260 physics, etc.

Not really so sure what my questions are yet, so I figured I would at least put out an intro for now and try to get to know the right people.

I noticed that TrueBones is located in Michigan, so I wanted to say hello to a fellow Michigander, as well as to everybody else here.

Nice to meet you all, and looking forward to much time spent here.

Thanks for reading,
Tom

Hi TOm,

Nice to meet you.

I suggest you try using 2 kinects starting out because its so easy to setup and calibrate.

You can be making motions by tonight this way.

Cheers

I was starting to think the same thing the more I thought about it.

With just using the dual Kinects should I still have the need to get an ssd? Or could I get away with waiting a bit on that till I get the other cameras down the road.

Just ordered two EVGA GTX 570's for sli, can't wait to see how that compairs to my sli 460's. Used to have a single 570 before.

Well, since my taxes hit tonight, I will order the 2 kinects tomorow after I find the best price, think gamestop online has them refirb with a power cord on sale for 89 bucks right now.

Thanks again,
Tom
