Hi there I see there are kinect tripod mount clips, that allow generic tripods to be used as mounts for Kinects, but does anyone know of any clips available that will allow PS3 Cameras to be mounted on generic tripods?

Cheers

I was looking into this a while back. I noticed that some Makerbot users have designed and printed their own Kinect tripod adapters. Not sure if any users are selling their DIY mounts but might be worth contacting them. (I happen to have a Makerbot kit but no time to assemble it yet. Sigh!)

Here's one Makerbot design:

I wound up getting two of these instead:

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Xbox360-K ... 609&sr=8-2

These are tripods with a special head for Kinect. They were really cheap but unfortunately they're made very cheaply. The tripod is metal but very lightweight; it works well enough for Kinect but it could be easily knocked over so watch out. The head is a little over engineered--it has a odd 'extension' in front meant for hanging behind a TV. This feature is unnecessary and unfortunately it actually makes the head awkward and possibly less stable.

That said, I still find these tripods convenient and usable. At first I wondered if vibration or bouncing might become an issue because we have wooden floors but so far it seems okay. Putting them away is easy--I just fold up the legs and stick them in a closet.

I can't say I recommend them because of the flimsy construction but it does the job for now. IMO, better to get a good adapter and two lightweight but better constructed tripods. One of these days I'll have to assemble that Makerbot and just print my own--maybe after we get our second movie finished.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I see now that you were actually asking about PS3 Eye camera mounts.

What I did was I purchased a Helicoil kit from Amazon. (It was $18 when I bought mine but looks like it's about $21 now.) This kit easily adds a threaded hole beneath the PS3 Eye camera that works perfectly with any standard camera tripod. All you need is a bench vise, an electric drill and a bit for metal. The PS3 Eye base already has a hole in the bottom (under the sticker) but it needs to be made just a little bigger for the Helicoil kit to work. This is very easy to do with the drill bit. After expanding the hole, use the tool that comes with the kit to tap it. Next, you use the tool to insert a coil, which is the actual threading you use to mount the camera to a tripod. After inserting the coil, you may want to clip it with a wire cutter and file it down to the base, otherwise it will be 'springy'. The kit comes with 12 coils so you have plenty to work with.

If you're handy with simple tools, modding a PS3 Eye camera only takes a few minutes. I made a video of the process a couple of years ago and completely forgot about posting it. If you're interested l can post it this weekend.

Thanks for that info.

I have been using the clampy bits from car jumper leads to lock ps3 cameras in to place, and I am thinking some glue on to a standard camera mounting plate would also do the trick..
Even lashings of our old friend duct tape could suffice I think..

Good to know theres a hole under those stickers!

Glue (epoxy resin style) some 1/4" whitworth (tripod thread) nuts on the bottom?
