Post subject:  kinect + PS3eye together?

Dear iPi,

1). suppose I have 1 kinect and 4 PS3 eye, is it possible to use them together? (in the same time while record.) cos I still don't have kinect, so haven't been able to try it.
2). kinect and ps3eye, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, in short why not use it together? (just curious).

Difficulties that still often I find is when doing the 360 ', or a squat movement. i know, My equipment is still lacking, maybe just the end of this year I was able to complete with ipi v.2, plus 2 kinect. but for now, I still play with my 4 ps3eye.

The current version doesn't allow for hybrid PS3 Eye/Kinect capture. This is just my opinion but I think there may be a few issues with using them together. For example:

1. they are two completely different data types--PS3 Eye is RGB video and Kinect is Z depth.

2. the devices have different frame rates--PS3 Eye 60 fps, Kinect 30 fps.

3. the lens are probably different between the devices.

Not saying they couldn't make them work together but it does complicate things a lot, and successfully merging and tracking this hybrid data would require extra processing which I imagine would slow performance down a bit. In the end, I don't think there would be any benefit to the results.

Just curious but what is your PS3 Eye camera configuration? I was able to do full 360 degree walks and squats without any difficulty using four PS3 Eye cameras. Here's a demo video I made a while back using four PS3 Eye cameras and a early version of iPi DMC:

If I remember correctly, the configuration used here was a semi-circle with three cameras at just below eye level and one camera up high.

Yes, first attempt, was a semi-circle. but now I tried one full circle using 4 cameras, 1 (front) below eye level and 3 follow the circle.
but from your demo video, it seems I have to clean my room again. :D
Maybe the condition/background of my current room still interfere ipi calculation process.
so...

Glad to help!

Just to be clear, it's okay to have a normal room background. A completely empty background like the one in my video may be more optimal but is certainly not necessary for recording good data--we just happen to have a small stage because we also do green screen shoots.

What you want to avoid it too much clutter, dark shadows, and highly reflective or bright surfaces--any of these things can affect the precision of the volume creation and tracking quality. For the performer, you want to avoid strong directional lighting--try to light the scene as flat and evenly as possible as hard shadows may confuse the tracker.

Proper clothing also helps. The suggested short sleeve black T-short, for example, minimizes the effect of shadows cast on the torso. The bright colored long sleeve shirt should contrast with the background. In my video this is shown at its most extreme: red shirt against green background. Again, it's not absolutely necessary to go this extreme but IMO if you really want the best quality data, it's worth the extra effort.
