Post subject:  Microsoft SDK vs PrimeSense Drivers?

I'm running the latest version of DMC and Recorder under Win7 64bit, but since I started with v1.x and upgraded I'm still using the PrimeSense drivers. I guess I incorrectly assumed the 2.0 upgrade install would automatically install the Microsoft Kinect SDK drivers. So, since things appear to be working as is...would it still be a smart idea to install the Kinect SDK drivers and use those instead. What are the exact benefits of using them vs PrimeSense? Will it improve the quality of recording, calibration or tracking at all?

Also, do I need to uninstall the PrimeSense drivers first?

Thanks,
Mitch

Although you've got an answer to your email, I duplicate it here for others to be informed:
Quote:
Yes, we recommend Microsoft Kinect SDK drivers.
They have minor advantages over PrimeSense driver: slightly higher
accuracy for depth/RGB alignment (not actually used for tracking as of
now), and less bugs.

You must remove PrimeSense driver registered as driver for Kinect.
Otherwise Kinect SDK driver won't be able to load.

(You can leave PrimeSense driver registered as official driver for
ASUS Xtion, if you have one - it should not be a problem having Kinect
and Xtion drivers installed on the same PC).

FYI. One of the bugs experienced with PrimeSense drivers is mixing camera/motor devices:

Just wondering but should XBox Kinect users be using SDK 1.5 or 1.6?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Currently we are developing Recorder using Kinect SDK 1.5, so it is better to use this version (and it is downloaded during Recorder's installation).
We have not yet tested which combinations of 1.5 and 1.6 would work (one with which Recorder is built, and one which is installed on a user's PC). After testing, we may decide to move Recorder on a new version, though we do not plan yet to use any of it's novelties.

Thanks for the information! I'll stick with 1.5 then. :)

The software only mentions 1.5 so I had wondered if this was outdated info in the software. Should a brief explanation be added to the description so users know they may be taking a risk by installing 1.6 at this time?

Of course it might be good enough to simply mention this in the FAQ and include a link to the page in the software if the user wants more detailed Recorder-specific driver information.

We've tested that recent versions of iPi Recorder work correctly with Kinect SDK 1.6. In the next update of iPi Recorder, it will be a recommended version of Kinect SDK to install.
