Post subject:  Palms down or forward?

This is an old question but I think it's worth asking again since we now have wrist tracking: in T-Pose, Palms down or palms facing forward?

Logically, it seems like it should be palms down since the iPi actor rig is palms down but in the past there was contradicting information about this.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Sorry, it's been a while since I put this much time into iPi DMC. I'm running as many tests as I can now before beginning a new shoot for a production.

I noticed that when refit pose is used repeatedly, I get palms forward. I had recorded this video palms forward, so is iPi Studio able to detect which way the palms face or is it making an assumption? (BTW, this is before I I have done anything with the Move controllers.)

I guess palms orientation might not be critical since the controllers should reorient the palms in the end--is this correct thinking?

Hi, Greenlaw
We do not have any specific recommendation for this.
In my opinion, it is more natural to have palms down in T-pose, because it corresponds to the default model's pose for hands. So it is easier to fit the model with the actor initially. However, when you holding palms forward, you just need to rotate the hand bones accordingly before Refit Pose.
When using PS Moves, you need to have one "simple" frame for the hand, where you can easily adjust hand bone's rotation to match the actor. This may not be a T-pose at all, just any convenient frame within the shot. So it does not matter much how exactly actor's hands are rotated in T-pose. Though, for me again, it is more natural to have fist holding PS Move facing the floor - i.e. PS Move is oriented forward with its sphere.

After talking with co-workers, I have an additional info.
For RGB cameras (PS Eye) it is indeed recommended to have palms forward in T-pose. It helps the software to obtain the hands color when analyzing an actor's appearance.
There is no need to correct default T-pose of the model in this case. However, you may prefer to do that to get the best possible fit with the actor.

Thanks for the clarification!

I started out doing palms forward because that's what I did with PS3 Eye to give the cameras a bigger visual target. But then I wondered if this was unnecessary for Kinect, which didn't use RGB, and maybe even undesirable since it conflicted with the pose--thus the confusion. I'll proceed with palms down then.

I'd like to suggest that this info be entered into the wiki--I'm sure all users will want to know. :)
