Does anyone know how beards might effect the software successfully recognizing actors heads? |

I would think this depends on the size and thickness of the beard. The software is looking for a clear head shape to do it's tracking magic, and a large thick 'Santa' beard will obviously obscure the position of the chin and jawline. A closely trimmed beard, on the other hand, should still allow the software to track the head just fine. G. |

But if ipi start to use Kinect rgb data to rotate the face in Y, it will become a problem? (because of the difference of colors between the face and the beard) |

We won't know until it's released of course but my guess (and this is purely a guess,) is that as long as certain features are identifiable to the tracker (eyes, nose, mouth maybe?) it should work fine. It's also my understanding that the RGB tracking will be used to assist the current system (adding bank for example,) and not completely replacing it. So in other words, Mocap Studio may still rely on using an identifiable, mostly beardless head shape for 3D tracking first and then use RGB tracking for further clues about orientation. If that's the case, a long thick beard that makes the chin and neck less distinct will likely cause problems for head tracking and a short neatly trimmed beard probably will not. I'm totally speculating though. I have no actual knowledge of what they have in mind. :) FWIW, I usually wear a short trimmed beard these days and the current iPi Mocap Studio has no problem with that. G. |

To be more specific, I am more interested in how a 4-6 Sony Eye camera setup handles beards. I have a beard which I keep at a 1/4 inch groomed on a regular basis. My beard hair color is of course different than my facial skin color. Greenlaw, good to know you are getting good results. Sounds like it shouldn't be an issue for me then. Guys, thanks for the replies. |

Yeah, I think so long as iPi can make out the shape of your head, you're all good. :) G. |
