Company that was selling an "affordable" mocap (YEI) jumped on the VR bandwagon and suddenly instead of $4000 they just want $350. How is that even possible? They claim it has 40m range. There are no reviews, so it's difficult to believe. I was going to buy two kinects then Microsoft showed greatly improved Kinect 2.0 and now even traditional mocap is going mainstream. Personally I see with the mass Kinect type capture solutions coming out daily it seems, I see the more advanced sensor gyro solutions coming down in price. The actually parts are very low cost. Software to accept the data virtually free. Mainly the high priced suits and setups you are paying the development cost right now. When more and more start offering these, I see the price dropping a lot more soon. I'm always on the lookout for a better, cleaner, real-time solution. PrioVR looks promising. They have a ton to go before they reach their goal of $250,000 and course production time is scheduled for May 2014 (which isn't too bad). I plan on the wait and see. If I end up paying more for a finished, tested and a quality released product, that's fine. |

This is obviously not fake. YTI is a respectable company. They already deliver inertial sensors to their customers for many years, albeit in a different price range (much more expensive). With PriorVR, the concept is to have low price by means of high volume (to keep manufacturing cost low) and position the suit as game controller, not mocap device. Since the project is in early stages (just started seeking funding on Kickstarter), it is hard to say if they succeed. The price ($350) may occur to be too high for gamers, leading to low volume and high manufacturing cost per unit. Even the success of they Kickstarter campaign is not secured yet, and that's just the first step. You know, these things, they take time. |
