I received today the newsletter with links to the 3 Kinect camera experimental Wiki for standard version. It shows a blueprint of optimal position of 3 Kinect cameras but it doesn't tells height. My question is what is the optimal height of cameras for 3 and 2 Kinect cameras? |

From my experience, I typically set the heights at around 4 to 5 feet--this seems to be a good height for many common actions. The height and angle is variable depending on the size of your room and the action you're trying to capture. For example, if there's a lot of jumping or climbing, you may want to slightly lower the Kinects and an angle them upward. And if the action is low to the ground, you may want to slightly raise them and angle them downward. Another variable that affects the height of the Kinects is the height of your actor. If the actor is very tall, you may need to raise the Kinect to capture the whole body. In general, you want to set it to whatever height and angle it takes for the devices to see what they need to see. You might be wondering if the heights of all the devices should the same or staggered. With PS3 Eye it's recommended that camera heights be staggered, but I'm not sure if this is also recommended for Kinect. If the Kinect devices are facing each other, it's probably a good idea to stagger the heights so that they don't fire IR rays directly into each other and confuse the software. (FYI, for this reason, they should never face each other at exactly 180 degrees.) To sum it up, there's no fixed height you should always use but hopefully this info gives you some guidelines for figuring out what may work best in a given situation. G. |
