I don't work for iPi Software but they have mentioned in other threads that they are working on Myo and Kinect 2 for Windows support, plus they will be adding some form of keyable feet locking constraints. Should be a very exciting year. :) G. |

Version 3 of iPi Mocap Studio is in active development. One of the top priorities is Kinect 2 for Windows support, of course. We already have our Kinect 2 for Windows dev kit and we are working with it. (Please keep in mind that Kinect 2 for Xbox has proprietary connector and cannot be used with PCs, so our users have to wait for Microsoft to release Kinect 2 for Windows later in 2014.) We also ported the code from DirectX 9 to DirectX 10. This should make further development easier, as DirectX 10 is much more developer-friendly. (This also means that version 3 will not work on Windows XP.) One of the new things planned for 2014 is biomechanical version, with support for specialized data formats. This should be helpful for our medical and industrial users. Other new features are still in research and development. |

Biomechanical extension will allow to plot or export data (for each bone): - Linear coordinates, velocities, accelerations - Euler angles, Angular velocities and accelerations - Quaternions and rotation matrices All data can be exported in global coordinate system (relative to floor), or local (relative to parent bone or center of mass). Export formats - MATLAB, or tab-separated text files (for Excel) Also point cloud export from depth sensors will be included. |

How is the Kinect 2 performance looking, relative to Kinect 1? Can it track more actors more successfully? Is the capture volume larger? I'm curious as the basic Kinect is proving difficult to get high enough quality results from, and in our own experience two Kinects worked worse than one. Also it would be great to get a larger capture volume. Sorry if this information is posted elsewhere, the search keeps ignoring the "2" when I search for "Kinect 2". :) |

I don't know much about the upcoming new Kinect for Windows, but I'm surprised to hear that you're seeing worse results using dual Kinect vs. single Kinect. FWIW, we've been getting far superior results when using the dual Kinect configuration. In fact, we recently added a third Kinect for Windows to our pipeline and are anticipating even better results because, in theory at least, this should nearly eliminate occlusion issues. I do know from experience that the Kinect system is very sensitive to IR pollution from natural lighting. If we shot our motions during the day, the quality of capture could be very poor unless we covered the windows with light blocking curtains (look for 'black out' material at fabric stores like Jo-Ann.) Or alternatively we will schedule our capture sessions for after sunset. Once we figured this out, the quality of our capture data has been consistently very good. Hope this helps. G. |
