Hi, I want to be able to setup and capture data at various locations. I'm looking at investing in a laptop for portability but concerned with the usb bandwidth if these will suffice for a 6 or 8 camera setup. Any advice is appreciated: MSI WS60 "workstation" laptop: This is my first choice and has 3 3.0 usb ports.. will that be enough? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834152618 DELL XPS M1710 (used): Cheap used gaming laptop that has 6 2.0 usb ports! http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-XPS-M1710- ... 4897.l5665 http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookr ... ics-specs/ SURFACE PRO 3: Probably a long shot, but I thought about a surface pro 3 with a docking station (3 3.0 usb and 2 2.0 usb ports). Hello If you plan to use a laptop with 6-8 cameras configuration, then you are in a big trouble. As you should know, the main thing for many cameras is the number of USB controllers (not even ports). We used to connect 6 cameras to DELL Alienware M17x laptop, which has 3 USB 2.0 ports (2 controllers) and 2 USB 3.0 ports (1 controller), with USB hub to extend the number of the ports. Unfortunately, modern laptops tend to have only USB 3.0 ports, so only a single USB controller is exposed. Also, an ExpressCard slot has become an ancient thing, so adding an external USB controller is not an option now. You should choose a laptop which has both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports which guarantees you at least 2 USB controllers (4 cameras at 60 fps or 6 cameras at 40-50fps). In v3, we plan to add the support for distributed recording. That will allow to cope with resource limits of a single laptop by using a couple of them. |
