Post subject:  Motionbuilder - model orientated problem

I am new to motionbuilder and mocap and i have a problem with my created animation file from Ipisoft.

On frame 0 the model is rotated 0,0,0 however on frame 1 the model rotates on the y axis to face biased direction.

i want to edit the animation so that it orientated at default 0,0,0 direction. i have edited the fcurve on the y axis on the hip but this seams to create allot of foot jitter. any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not sure what you're workflow is but what I do is simply export 'BVH for Motion Builder' from iPi Mocap Studio. The iPi Mocap Studio skeleton's T-pose should be correctly oriented for Motion Builder at the first frame--no adjustment should be necessary.

Assuming your MB character is oriented properly and that both the character and the imported iPi skeleton has been properly characterized, setting the Input of the character to the iPi skeleton should work just fine.

I should mention that I'm still using Motion Builder 2011. One of the guys I work with uses 2015 though and he says the iPi Mocap Studio data imports work well for him too.

My pipeline is. 1. Record motion in IpiSoft (working as expected). 2. Export to BVH File. 3. Import Into Motion Builder. I would expect the animation to face the same direction in frame 0 and frame 1. My animation is me Standing in T Pose then i place my arms down and then back to T Pose. i do not rotate my body.

See the image below that shows the shift in orientation frome frmae 0 and frame 1. Do i need to configure IPISoft to set forward direction ?

I suppose you have the option 'Export T-pose in the first frame' checked on the Export tab. With this option, Mocap Studio sets the first frame of animation to T-pose. If you don't need this behavior, just turn the option off.

What Vmaslov says is probably what I'm doing differently. All I know is that when I import the iPi Mocap Studio BVH for Motion Builder, it comes into Motion Builder automatically facing in the same orientation as my character's skeleton and the Motion Builder control rig default orientation.

The second frame is where I'll find whatever orientation the performer's T-Pose was during capture (assuming I decide to include it in the ROI, which I may for hair and clothing dynamics preroll,) but that frame does not normally need to be oriented the same way as the default T-Pose. If you absolutely need it to be in the same orientation as the default T-Pose, you can align it in Mocap Studio using the alignment command. Keep in mind that the captured T-Pose is not what you typically want for retargeting--for that you should use the default T-Pose, which has all joints zero-ed out.

Hello amcneilly,

I think you want to check the "recenter coordinate system on character in the first frame" option on the export tab. Or you can go to the scene tab and click Recenter coordinate on character when you character is doing his T-Pose. This way your character will be rotated 0,0,0. It would be interesting if you could rotate the coordinate system around the y axis and set the origin on the x-z plane manually. IpiSoft if you read this message ;-).
