Post subject:  22.5% throughput improvement?

I'm running two copies of Studio on my machine, using a single card, tracking about .445 fps for each, for a combined .89. If I run a single copy, I get .726. So ... by running 2 copies, I'm processing about 22.5% more fps. Only useful if you need to process more than one capture file, at a time. The CPU usage was very high, when I did this, and it's a fairly strong machine, so ... can't swear it will work for everyone, and ... have only tried it once, so ... maybe I'm wrong, but given the number of files I need to chew thru sometimes, it's certainly potentially useful. If they could let me dedicate a GPU to each copy of Studio ... then I might be able to throw my older card back into the mix, and do even better ... which I've requested in the "Feature Request" area.

Anybody else notice this? Old news?

Thanks.
Mike

What do you mean, 2 copies?

Running the studio open twice and a different file tracking in each? guessing that's what you meant.

I don't know there is a way to dedicate a card per studio open on a single processor machine.

You would need a dual processor machine and motherboard to handle separation for each processor/card and dual monitors running 1 off each card, basically 2 separate computers in one running on the same OS.

If someone does know a way on a single processor machine, please elaborate.

Most speed I can get with all boxes ticked, shoulders from video and flexible spine with my config. is .56 f/s and 1.75 ptpf, maybe 1 better card would help, but 1 to 1 speed even with the best card I don't think would happen, maybe I am wrong though, I haven't tried, nor heard of any fantastic tracking speeds yet.

2 cards by what I have read here doesn't give much greater results with one studio running.

I don't mind the speed as much as I mind having to re-track errors, then not being able to correct them easily anyway in iPi, so that's why I shot for the best way to get the best single pass tracking I can and I am very close now to practically no unreasonable single pass errors with 4 cam set up and easier clean up in 3d editor.

You got it. Run 2 copies of Studio, process a different capture in each. Depending on CPU, GPU, and memory resources, this isn't exceptional. I've had video encoding programs act this way, before. It seems that running 2 copies lets me use my resources more fully ... Another system might use it's resources in a more balanced manner with a single copy ... as a guess. When I guess about other peoples software, I'm usually wrong, but .bottlenecks aren't unusual

The 60% improvement! running 2 identical card may not sound like much, but it reduced a 16 hour overnite batch process down to 10 hours. Since I've had to add the tick to more of the boxes, the next time I have a big overnite run, it will be even more helpful. I did upgrade to a single 750ti, which helped even more, and I'm shopping for a matching card, but if the dual Studio trick helps even further ...the extra fps will be very welcome.

Hmm, you're saying adding a second card improved your processing by 60%? or the single 750 was better than 2 of the others?

That was running the same or about the same amount of files at same frame lengths? approximate.

What was your CPU usage running with 2 cards?

I may try an additional card, or 2 better ones, if I can get 60% increase per file and not eat up my CPU usage, but I don't think I can. I am at 15% average CPU now while processing. so I have some to go up, but wouldn't want to run it past 50% steady that long anyway with processing pretty much long hours daily.

That would put me at 1.05 ptpf at .95 f/s , so better, but I don't see it, didn't think I could get 1 to 1 unless I upgraded my processor, but I won't know unless I tried I guess.

I can't batch process, so I have to process single files anyway one at a time.

Yes, all programs run different, so hard to compare 1 programs effects to another.

I feel if I stick with iPi, I will need to upgrade some things anyway.

2 cards are 60% faster than 1, just processing normally ... A single Studio process. This was what ipisoft states, hidden somewhere in the wiki, and seems accurate. Also stated in one of vsmaslov's responses to me. Have to be identical, or closely matched cards. Mismatched cards can produce worse results than either card alone.

Bummed the sale on the 750 Ti ended, before I decided to get a second. The new 960, as a single card is probably a better deal, currently, and may be as fast or faster than a pair of 750's. If it follows form, there ought to be some discounts on that one once it's been on the market for a month, or two.

..

(Note: just so people know, your Motherboard has to be compatible to the video card or multi-card chosen).

Looks like New Egg has...

MSI 750ti for $129 after rebate, $159 actual DX 11.2 support No SLI 60w comsumption

GTX 960 for $200 No rebate DX12 support w/ SLI 120w comsumption

Standard version 750ti... Gaming version not available or Out of Stock.

Tiger Direct has MSI GTX 750 Gaming in-stock for $129 after rebate $145 actual.

Are you running and HDD or an SSD?

SSD would also make a difference in processing speed.

My card is a few yrs old now, so I can imagine newer technology would equal better output, only up to me to upgrade :)

I'm running an SSD. I think that's helpful, mainly for the 6 camera capture, but you may be right ... It may be helping the tracking speeds as well ... Another variable I'll consider when I do some more testing, today. Wanted to at least try running 3 Studio tasks, as well.

Did the same test with the weaker gtx 460, and running 2 copies of Studio produced slightly WORSE total fps compared to a single copy.
My particular 460 had a meager (by todays standards) 768mb, compared to the 2gb 750ti card I previously tested with, which may or may not have been significant.
Shipped the 750ti off (ebay), and will install, and retest with 1 gtx960, when it arrives (probably Thursday).
