Post subject:  MotionInJoy trouble and solution

I had planned to record motions this afternoon and found a rude surprise: my three Motion Controllers no longer appeared for Recorder! Yikes!

Since I'm running under Windows 10, I'm using the MotionInJoy drivers. When I opened the DS3 Tool, everything looked normal: I saw both the Bluetooth adapter and the controllers. So I selected Load Driver. The driver for the controllers loaded fine but the one for the Bluetooth adapter failed. Ugh!

So I thought about what might have changed recently and the first thing I thought of was the big Windows 10 'anniversary' update that came out a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the update reset some settings that prevents the driver from working? This made some sense since the MIJ driver isn't officially supported by Microsoft.

Thanks goodness for these forums! This situation sounded a little familiar to me so I did a quick search in these forums for information on what to do. Sure enough, I ran into this same situation last year and I had to disable Windows 10's Driver Signature Enforcement. To do this:

1. Under the Windows menu, select Settings.
2. Enter 'Recovery' in the 'Find a setting' box.
3. Select 'Recovery options'.
4. Click on 'Recovery'.
5. Under 'Advanced startup' click on 'Restart now'. Computer will restart and...
6. ...a menu will appear. Choose 'Troubleshoot'.
7. Another menu will appear. Choose 'Advanced options'.
8. Under 'Advanced options' choose 'Startup Settings'.
9. Select 'Restart'. Computer will restart again and...
10. ...in a few moments, another menu will appear. Press '7' or 'f7' on your keyboard to choose 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement'. Windows will restart.

When you return to the desktop, the MotioninJoy DS3 Tool should now be able to load the drivers properly. After successfully loading the Bluetooth driver, everything worked as it should again.

Note: I did run into one other problem when trying to select '7' from the keyboard--my keyboard had become disabled. What I did was I changed USB ports for the keyboard--typically, there is one port that will always work for USB keyboards even when the device drivers have not loaded yet, and this one is usually the port closest to the power supply. After switching ports, I was able to enter '7' on the keyboard and proceed.

Anyway, it appears I'm back in business again. I hope this info helps anybody else running into this problem after the latest Win 10 updates.

This also brings up a renewed concern about relying on the MotionInJoy drivers. As we all know, MIJ support has been long discontinued by the original developer, I'm afraid that sooner or later it's going to break. It would be excellent if we could finally switch to using current Bluetooth adapters and native Windows 10 drivers.

I seem to recall the iPi Soft team had at one time considered developing their own driver for iPi Motion Capture. Is this still a possibility? I know I'd feel a lot more comfortable using 100% genuine iPi branded software. :)

Thanks for listening guys! Thanks for the new Mocap Studio update and please keep up the great work!

I can vouch that that is the correct way, I thought I posted it before somewhere when I switched to Win 10, Maslov explained to me then.

Only issue is that if you have to unplug your dongle from its port, you will have to reload the drivers again when re-plugged in, but it's painless.

Today's release allow pairing without the use of Motion in Joy drivers.

Very nice, works like a charm, once first paired with USB cable connection, then stays paired on subsequent Recorder re-start, even after unplugging of the Dongle and re-plugging.

Thanks!

THANK YOU!

This is a very big deal for users because I imagine it widens the field to newer and cheaper BT dongles. The older 'compatible' ASUS dongles were getting difficult to find and way too costly for what they are.

Personally, I was concerned that Motion-In-Joy was going to break any day now with a Windows 10 updates. This update should be a welcome relief.

I'll remove Motion-In-Joy from my computer tonight and let you know how it goes.

It got too late to record anything last night with the updated software but I did get to try out the new adapter support. Well sort of. I removed MIJ as soon as my computer booted up and installed the new iPi Recorder update. Then I switched on my three PS Moves and launched the new Recorder.

And there they were, ready to go! :)

This looks very promising. I still need to check if they will appear after a reboot, and I'll do a complete test tonight or early tomorrow. (Then, it's back to recording motions for our film.)

I never installed MIJ on my other computer (the Windows 10 tablet,) but I'll give the new Recorder with PS Move controllers a try there too.

Will this now work with a wider array of the newer dongles also?

I don't know. Since this is now working with native drivers, I would assume so...but you know what they say when you 'assume'.

I have at least two BT dongles but neither are 'new'. The one I'm using with Recorder now is that old standby Asus (BT211 I think?) I can try another one tonight.

Maybe iPi can confirm if newer dongles should work?
