Please see the youtube video in the link below. It describes issues with the software as well as makes suggestions on how to make the software more intuitive.

I know the iPi guys sent you info, so I'll just post a few tips I picked up from using the software for the past few years.

Re: camera order. I'm sure they told you that you can drag the viewports around to any order you want so there is already a solution for that. This works with PS3 Eye or Kinect recording. Here's a handy tip not in the manual: when setting up your session, face a camera and hold up a number of fingers for that camera. For example, face camera 1 and hold up 1 finger; face camera 2 and hold up 2 fingers; camera 3, etc. When you look at the computer screen, it will be obvious, which camera are facing. Now that you know, drag the viewports in the desired order. Obviously, this trick is extremely useful when working with as many as six cameras but it's handy even if you only have two cameras (i.e., dual Kinect.) If it's difficult to see how many fingers your holding up from across the room, you can double-click a viewport to make it fill the screen; double-click it again to go back to multi-view mode and sort your views.

One more thing: you need to do this sorting before you start recording in iPi Recorder, not after. You can't move viewports in iPi Studio around AFTER you've already recorded the video. To be honest, this really doesn't matter much; having views in sequential order is more for user convenience than a software requirement. IMO sorting your camera views sequentially is worth the extra effort though.

By the way, except for the fingers tip, all this is covered in the manual, and the software is actually incredibly intuitive once you've gone through it once or twice.

Re: Calibration Tab. For this to appear you need to load a calibration video first. No you do not need to recalibrate for every motion; just save your calibration scene data and reload it for each motion. In other words, when you're ready to track motion, load your motion video and then load your calibration scene data. This is, of course, assuming all your motion videos were recorded in the same session as when you recorded the calibration video. Naturally, if you move any of your cameras, you will need to record a different calibration video and recalibrate for the session that follows it. Obviously, you want to avoid doing that. This is pretty easy to do though if you plan your session carefully. For example, I was able to record motions for three characters for the 17 shots in 'Happy Box' in about an hour. Only one calibrated scene file was needed for all the motions in the movie.

For the most part, every question you asked is covered in the manual or the wiki, so I highly recommend studying these resources first. There's also a few good threads in these forums that go into specific 'non-standard' situations that users have encountered.

iPi DMC is actually incredibly simple to use considering what it actually does is incredibly complicated. Right now you won't find another motion capture system that's easier to use or as accurate anywhere near its cost. That said, some users may find visual instructions more helpful, so be sure to watch the video walkthroughs listed in the wiki. Tip: don't follow my videos--they are not meant to be walkthroughs, they are just demos of what the software does, not how to use it. FWIW, I try to quickly explain what the software is doing, which may offer some insight. I'm considering doing a few actual walkthrough videos in the future, though that probably won't be till sometime after the holidays.

BTW, Mr. Bones has already done several walkthrough videos specifically for Kinect so you might want to check them out.

If you have questions about something not covered in the manual or wiki (and admittedly, there are a few of those,) feel free to ask.

G.

I believe that iPiSoft is forgivable in many of its shortcomings for the asking price.

You will not be able to buy iPiSoft for such a low of price ever.

Get iPiSoft it whiles its hot and cheap. Only $399.00 via Paypal at Trubones until 2012.

(now includes support and updates)

After that the price is sure to go up....

Maybee past $595.00 if they keep adding things to it.

Those things(features) you freely speak of adding to iPiSoft of will not come cheaply.

Nor should they.

Cheers
