I am just looking for some general knowledge of how are attachments handled in ipistudio.

Props tracking is not supported in current version.
This feature is still in development. In future versions, we plan support for PlayStation Move and Wii Motion Plus for props tracking.

However you can import a character that has a prop attached already, right?

I think a great solution would be to do some basic marker tracking. We would place markers on our props, and iPi would track those along with the mocap. I would love to see a feature like this.
