Hi Ipi

After trying for several hours, I've finally had to give up trying to do something I've done successfully MANY times.

I've attached screenshots of my 2 x Kinects calibration setup video, and screenshots of what I get afterwards. I'm really disappointed and hugely frustrated that I've not been able to complete my motion capture session today.

Can you (or any members) take a quick look at my screenshots, and maybe tell me where I'm going wrong....as I'm baffled as to why it's not working.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you usually use 90-degrees setup or it is one of the first time?
From the screenshots I see that you do not hold the board properly. It should be visible as rectangle in both sensors simultaneously. While on your screenshots it is perfectly visible to camera #1, but is completely invisible to camera #2.
Maybe, you can still get good results from your calibration video, if you set a reasonable ROI. So the board is well visible to both cameras in all frames.

Hi vmaslov, thanks for your reply. Yes, I do a 90 degree angle with both Kinects. I hold the board both vertically and horizontally and record two different calibration videos. When I hold the board, I hold to face camera 1, and then turn the board to face camera 2, and then repeat fror good measure.

When I click the calibrate to plane button, the five dots follow the board fine, but what's happened is that my body (the RBG depth representation) splits to two different positions, rather than joining into the one figure (if that makes sense)

OK, I've got it...I'm turning the board too far when facing the other camera. it should be visible at the same time. My other calibrations must've worked by fluke this whole time!

I'll give it another go this week.

I took a day off work to have another stab at doing some motion capture, and I've got to say after doing so many successful mocaps in the past, I feel like I'm cycling backwards with calibrating.

I have pretty much wasted hours of great mocap acting today because I just can't get Ipi to calibrate correctly.

Unfortunately I'm so insanely busy, that if it doesn't work on the day I'll have to wait another couple of weeks before I can give it another go, and maybe this is why I may be forgetting the fundamentals. Who knows.

And to prove how desperate I am to resolve this situation, I've recorded my calibration process and posted it on YouTube so you can take a look.

I'd really appreciate it if fellow Ipi users out there could watch my clip, and point out the obvious. I feel like I've done it right, but evidently not...

0:43 board is tilted away to much (to much yellow on the whole side from your right hand, so it will not pick up corners on that side). For comparison 1:10 is nice and it should be like that for whole video.

I would do one step back, as you have some space over there. Stand next to wall, it will allow cameras to pick up larger angles of board rotation. I hope it will help. Good luck :)

Personally I never used such a small board, but have seen people using same size as yours with good effects (online videos).

archon gives you the right directions. To summarize:

• Use larger board if possible
• Make an angle between the sensors a bit less - about 70-75 degrees, not 90. This will make the board better visible in both devices simultaneously.

As an alternative, try to use the flashlight calibration technique, recently introduced for depth sensors.

Thanks guys for your recommendations. I'm now using a much bigger board, and I perform about 5 calibrations takes with the board at varied angles so that hopefully one of them will work in Ipi Studio.

Luckily for me one of them did work after today's session, so I'm happy. Although I have a new hurdle, but that's in a new post!
