I am a newbie here.... I just bought 4 ps3 cameras but there is a problem with the ipi recorder. I installed the ipi recorder and it works fine with one camera ( records fine and everything) but when i attach just another camera, it opens up normally with the camera selector ( it can see the 2 cameras) but when i press ok it gives me a series of errors that start with:
1. WinUsb_controlTransfer Failed ( then i press ok to give me)
2. It is possible that your camera does not support selected resolution/framerate. Try different resolution/framerate. ( then i press ok to give me).
3. It is possible that your USB/firewire cable is not plugged firmly, or there was a temporary camera driver glitch. Replugging your camera or restarting iPi Recorder may fix the problem.
and now he doesn't see any of the cameras....
can anybody please help me ..

note: I am using a due core 2 2.4 with 2 GB . Geforce GTS 250. Windowa Vista SP1 with .net 3.5 as well as the framework 3.1.

Do you use any hubs or active USB cables? If yes, then what model?
Do you have CodeLabs driver for PS Eye camera installed?

The error message ("WinUsb_controlTranfer failed") looks like you have a problem with cable.

I recommend that you try the following:

1) Uninstall iPi Recorder and "iPi WinUSB driver registration for Sony PS3 Eye camera". Uninstall CodeLabs driver for PS Eye camera or AlexP driver if you have it installed.
2) Reboot your PC.
3) Install iPi Recorder.
4) Reboot your PC.
5) Plug in one Sony PS Eye camera into your PC. Do not use any hubs or cables, plug the camera directly into USB port on your PC.
6) Make sure Windows reports correct installation of driver.
7) Plug in another Sony PS Eye camera into your PC. Do not use any hubs or cables, plug the camera directly into USB port on your PC.
8) Run iPi Recorder.

I don't Have any hubs or usb active attached.I do attach the cameras directly to the computer. I will uninstall the codec labs driver and let you know the results.
note: I thought you can't attach multiple cameras to a hub, am i right? If i can, what are the recomended hubs for iPi.

I finally got around to testing all four PS3 cameras on my laptop, a dual core XP Pro 32-bit system. I have all four cameras plugged into the laptop, no hub: one camera has two USB repeaters, and two with one repeater each, and one plugged directly into the laptop. I'm consistently getting 50fps at 320 x 240 with no dropped frames. (At 60fps, it's gets less reliable.) I know this info isn't particularly helpful to you, but it confirms that it should work.

One thing I did was to install Recorder from the standalone installer downloaded from the iPi Soft website, which installs the drivers. (The live updater apparently does not.) I did not previously have the drivers from the Code Labs website installed, only the ones the Recorder installer installs.

At 640x480 in raw Bayer mode, you can attach up to two Sony PS Eye cameras to a hub. But in that case you should be careful not to attach two hubs to the same USB controller.

USB controller is not the same as USB port. Ports are dumb electrical contacts. USB controller is an intelligent device that sits deep inside your PC. Modern PCs (both Intel-based and AMD-based) have two USB 2.0 controllers integrated into motherboard. PC manufacturers don't make any markings to help identify ports connected to the same controller. You should experiment with different ports to find out the best configuration. Usually, closely placed ports (like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB_Front_Port.jpg ) connect to the same controller (so you should avoid plugging all four cameras to such pair of ports via hubs), while ports on different sides of laptop tend to connect to different controllers (so you should plug two cameras to left side and two cameras to right side).

Make sure you use USB 2.0 hub (not USB 1.0). There exists a gazillion different USB hub models, most of them should be good. It is hard to recommend any particular hub. The only thing I can say about hubs is: expensive hubs does not seem to be any better then cheap hubs.

At 320x240, you probably can attach all four cameras to the same hub and still get good frame rate.

Thanks for clarifying how USB controllers and ports work.

The other night I did a little investigating and, even though my 4-year old laptop has six ports, I think it actually has only one USB 2.0 controller on the motherboard (and four 1.1 controllers.) I'll have to try Recorder with my Tablet PC, which I believe is a little more powerful than my old laptop. It only has 3 exterior ports but hopefully it has 2 USB controllers inside and I can use a powered hub to expand one of the ports.

Edit: I just checked device manager in my tablet PC and it does appear to have two internal controllers. This weekend I'll compare Recorder performance between my laptop, tablet PC, and workstation. Also, I got a GTS 250 for the workstation the oher day and will compare its performance to my currently installed graphics card. (Haven't installed it yet because I need a LP4 to 6 pin adapter. It's always something, isn't it?

You can add USB controller to a laptop via USB 3.0 ExpressCard, like this:

(Be careful to select correct ExpressCard physical form factor for your particular laptop.)

But please avoid what they sell as "USB 2.0 controller ExpressCard". Those are usually not real USB controllers but are dumb internal USB hubs that route signal to USB 2.0 controllers on motherboard.

Thanks for the tip. :)

The problem is that the ExpressCard slot is being used by an eSata card for a video RAID. I'll see if it's possible to install an SSD in this laptop as a second drive for capture, which would free up the ExpressCard slot for a second USB controller.

In the meantime, my best bet for highest quality capture is to use my workstation, which I was avoiding because I didn't want to move that machine around so much, but now I'm curious about how much better it will be. Will let you know how that goes. (Though I have to say even the 'low quality' test looked pretty decent.)

Edit: Just learned that the laptop has only one drive bay, so I guess I be using the workstation.

I did a capture test this morning using the workstation instead of the laptop, but since we're getting off-topic for this forum, I'll continue this discussion in the forum about improving fps.

How can I get acceptable FPS on capture?
