Hi,

I'm trialing ipiSoft with 2 Kinects and I have a really weird problem. I'm getting a "grey stripe" of missing data across one of the cameras when I open the AVI created by the ipiRecorder in ipi Studio.
It looks like this:



The grey stripe stays there throughout the recording. In every recording it's a different thickness or in a different place vertically in the frame but it's almost always there and always stretches across the frame left to right. It always runs at the same slight diagonal angle ascending from left to right. Sometimes it's on camera 1, sometimes camera 2. It makes calibration impossible.

It isn't a problem with the computer running ipi Recorder - I've tried 2 different computers. I don't think it's electrical interference in the Kinect cables - I've tried moving the Kinects around. I've tried capturing without recording the RGB and the stripe still appears in the depth data.

When I play the AVI in Windows Media Player it looks fine and the stripe isn't visible.

I have no problems when I use just 1 Kinect - it only happens when I use 2 Kinects.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit on all my computers. This was recorded on a core 2 Quad Q9400 running @2.66Ghz with 8GB of RAM.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? This is driving me crazy! :(

Could that be your shelf or the camera is overtitlted?

Try not tilting the camera as much

It actually wasn't the shelf or anything physical. I think I've finally fixed the problem - would you believe it seems to be caused by using an older Kinect (12 mths or so) and a newer Kinect together! I went out and bought another new one and it fixed the problem. Very odd indeed.

BTW loving your YouTube vids! Very handy! :)

Do you find you get better results using the opposing Kinect setup than you do with the 90degree setup? Also what height do you have the Kinects at and how far apart in the opposing Kinect setup?

Try this second video was our very first 180 test, that was with the old calibrator.

It is ten times better and faster now.

Ive found that you can spread them up to about 20 ft if you so chose.

You really need to experiment with different angles and heights to find the best situation for the space available.

iPi is really good at just that.

I suggest doing all calibrations starting with the 30 -60 for slower acting moves...

and the 90 180 degree angle front and back for faster sports like moves...and dance.

Just a thought: if the issue does turn out to be 'old' vs 'new', you might be able to update the 'old' Kinect's firmware to match the new one. A few days ago, another user in these forums described how to do that using an XBox connected to the internet. (Sorry, I don't have an XBox so I cannot try this myself to confirm.)
