Ok problem solved. It was the usb cable itself! I didn´t realize just how sensitive it was, apparently long cables are out of the question. Or perhaps a high quality, well insulated cable is what I need.

Anyway, thanks for helping me track this down. FPS is now solid 30! Now on to the motion capture...

Glad to hear you got it working!

If you need a longer USB cable you should try a USB Repeater cable (also known as an Active Extension cable.) This looks like a regular USB cable except for a box on the end which boosts the power over long distances. You can typically daisy chain up to five of these cables for even greater distances. I use several of these cables with the PS3 Eye cameras but they should work for Kinect too.
