Hi, I have tried many different things to try and get my 3 logitech quickcam pro 9000 webcams to reach a FPS that is consistant.

I have bought a seperate usb card, and tried them all in different port (front and back of my computer, as well as the new card in the back)
It seems be be shifting from 8 frames a second to 6, although I have actually seen it working at 30 FPS, but only for one camera.

I have tried to set my quickcam settings all to manual, because I read somewhere that it struggles with three cameras, but as of yet, I can't work it out.
I have tried having just two of the cameras connected, as well as dropping the size to capture down to 320 or 160 even.

Can someone please let me know what is going wrong with my setup, I am using, windows XP
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+ Processor
and an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250

Any help would be most welcome, thanks

Hi, I have been trying to get the Frames per second to be a stable 30, but all I can manage is for it to hover between 5 and 8

Pretty sure my machine should be able to handle it, I bought a seperate usb card to try to split them and carry the load, but that didn't help, turned off my dual screen monitors back down to single, but nothing.

Here are my specs, if you can help in any way, it will be most appreciated.
I am using 3 x logitech Quick cam pro 9000
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 5200+ CPU
and am Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 GPU

I really want to be able to test this program out, but at the moment, it is just impossible.
My Logitech software is up to date.

Cheers, Matt

Your computer is surely fast enough to capture at 30 FPS.

You just need to turn off auto-exposure/auto-gain in Logitech camera controls, and manually adjust gain and exposure to get high FPS.

See Ian Chisholm's tutorial for more details on how to do this:

Thanks Michael, I discovered that is was the exposure set to highly which was dragging it down, I have since then changed my cameras to ps3 cameras, and have gotten MUCH better results with regards to size and frame rate. (lucky I bought my cameras from staples, which have a 30 day returns feature)

Michael already answered but, yes, the exposure settings can really drag down your fps; I think you can raise brightness if you need to without affecting the camera speed, but be careful you don't lose too much contrast.

The trick is making sure all the settings for each camera is set optimally, which can be confusing because you'll find yourself jumping between a lot of panels, and double- and even triple-checking your settings. I think this is because Logitech probably didn't anticipate anybody wanting to use four webcams simultaneously on one computer and didn't design the interface for that. Once set, however, the settings should persist between sessions.

I'm glad to hear that optimizing settings is much easier with the PS3 Eye cameras. I'm still hoping to try out these new cameras this week.

I'm carrying this over from another forum. I have been testing Recorder using a laptop and the fps was acceptable but not as good as it should be. As it turns out, my laptop only has one USB 2.0 controller inside, and the best I could do with four PS3 cameras on this system was 320 x 240 at 30 fps with zero dropped frames. (Recording to an external eSATA mini-RAID I built.)

So this morning I brought my quad core computer onto the set. This computer is about two and a half years old and not exactly a powerhouse by today's standards but it's a pretty good workhorse of a computer. Anyway, with it I can successfully record from four PS3 cameras at 640 x 480 at 40 fps. Not the best rate but significantly better than what I was getting with my old laptop, plus double the resolution. :)

This machine does have two onboard USB 2.0 controllers, but I couldn't sustain 60 fps without dropping a ton of frames. It did a little better at 50 but I also got video rolling effect, which doesn't happen at other frame rates. I tried different USB port configs, but the dropped frames got worse, so I think this 640 x 480 at 40 fps is the max with this computer.

There's one more thing I'll try before settling: this afternoon I ordered a separate USB 3.0 controller card, which I think will let me get the full 60 fps I'm shooting for.

In the meantime, I think what I'm getting is going to work just fine though. I mean, it's significantly better than what I was getting with the Logitech cameras.

Tonight I'll record a few more practice motions and maybe some test motions for the short film tonight. I'll let everybody know how that goes.

G.

I got very good results from last night's session. Good enough that I think I'm not going to bother upgrading my computer any further. I've come to realize that if I want more horsepower for iPi Studio, it would be much easier and more effective to build a new system than to push my current computer beyond what it was designed for. Basically, the GTS 250 and the USB 3.0 card I got don't quite work with this particular computer, so I'm going shelve these parts until I get a new system. That's not going to happen for several months though, so I'm just not going to think about it right now. :p

Anyway, I showed last night's tests to some people at work, and sparked a lot of interest in iPi Studio. I'll upload the the tests to YouTube after I refine things a bit and get that article written for my website.

I'm still having issues importing iPi .dae files into Animeeple and LightWave, but I've asked the developers of these programs to take a look at the files for me. If they tell me anything informative about the iPi .dae files or their importers, I'll pass it on to you guys.
