Hi,

I read the section in the Wiki regarding importing a custom character rigs. I haven't tried this feature myself but I plan to do so later today or tomorrow. I was wondering, what file format does iPi DMC want for importing custom character rigs?

I know you guys don't support FBX yet but that would be preferable. (I'm currently using FBX to exchange data between Animeeple and Lightwave for a short film project.)

Thanks in advance for any info.

G.

Latest version supports skinned characters in COLLADA format. You can use the free Autodesk FBX Converter ( http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc ... d=10775855 ) to convert your character from/to COLLADA.

I just checked import/export of skinned COLLADA characters between LightWave and iPi. Looks fine in LightWave 9.6.

By the way, LightWave seems to have good COLLADA support, so probably you can skip FBX and just export you character in COLLADA straight from LightWave.

Wow collada importer! Sounds interesting. I'm trying it now. For a custom bone configuration, IPI has a bvh formatted importer. This is what I use, mostly because everything I use at the moment are bvh files. Any custom bone can be created and then matched up quite easily with the IPI default bone structure in the Import window. Then I save that bone structure with it match to the default bones in an xml file that IPI creates by saving the profile. It works a bit goofy when going back to import this bone profile because you have to import a bvh first to be allowed to access the Load button. It's just an extra set anyways and I already have the bvh there also. Anyways, that how I do it. Things might be different now with the collada import.

I'm hitting an error trying to import target character:
"Cannot open file:"
here it has my file's name and directory,
"The given key was not present in the dictionary."

Don't know what that is all about. Any ideas that could help me out?

I get the exact same error message when I try to import one of my characters. Would be great to hear a solution because so far, I love your software and would love to buy it - if it does what I need it to. Which IS working with my character rigs.

It seems like latest versions are not able to import own actors at all.. :(
I have IPIStudioSetup.exe from Apr 16, 2011 and it import actors perfectly but have other flaws and random crashes. New version works much more smoothly but lacks support for custom models.. Weird :(

mrbones, I appreciate time you spent writing this comment, but I'd rather suggest you to spend some time READING the topic before.. There is no way to import any kind of model to new version of iPI Studio. Of course you can export animation with default skeleton but then you'll have to spent some more time re-targeting it to your rig.
