I'm quite new to MotionBuilder, so this could be my mistake, but ...

When I try to characterize the bvh export from ipi, I get the following error msg:

I've also tried the 3dsMax export, but MotionBuilder says the bvh file is not the correct format, or something to that effect.

I believe there are other optional bones that should also be set up in addition to these required bones.

MotionBuilder is an expensive application designed specifically for retargeting motions from one custom rig to another, so we presumed MotionBuilder users know how to use motion capture data. We do not have optimizations for MotionBuilder yet. It will take us some time to study MotionBuilder and come up with optimizations. For now, you can use our motion transfer ( http://www.ipisoft.com/en/wiki/index.ph ... ustom_Rigs ) with a custom skeleton that works for you with MotionBuilder.

Their educational pricing is quite reasonable, or it would be out of my reach.

I was able to create a MotionBuilder template for the iPi rig without too much problem. I use that to 'characterize' the imported bvh file.

As I'm so new to all of this, I don't understand it well enough to know if I've set it up properly, but it seems to work well at the moment and I can animate characters inside of MotionBuilder using iPi generated bvh files - so I'm happy at the moment.
