| Post subject: | DMC/Kinect odd relaxed pose |
This is something I just cannot seem to correct and it seems like the way that DMC is tracking arms but say you start with T pose, it doesn't matter how you place your palms, DMC always has them facing down. Now lower your arms to your side, having just lowered arms, the flat palms would now be facing inwards. EVERY time I do this with the Kinect, my palms are facing backwards and backs of my hands are facing forwards. This is a bit of a gorilla pose and isn't very "human" relaxed. Please can this be looked at as it is a very poor starting point for any relaxed standing type poses as a starting point. |

I second this request. I'm not using Kinnect (we've got the PS3 Eyecams) but the palm tracking/arm twisting is frustrating. I get the "inward turned" arms at times in my mocap - making it "gorilla-ish". Is the only recourse to manually align the arm rotations and "Refit Pose"? Sometimes that just gets re-twisted. Any help/guidance on this subject matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! One thought... would it ever be beneficial to DMC to affix flat paddles to our palms so that it can more clearly interpret the angle of the arm/wrist? |

Hi, AFIK, iPi doesn't support forearm twist or wrist bend; in fact the forearm bone isn't even set up for twisting. The way to correct this is to twist the forearm roll joint or wrist joint of your target rig in your mocap editing or animation program. It should be very easy to do but of course this depends on how you've rigged your target character. G. |

I believe you are correct in saying that iPi doesn't support wrist tracking. I do believe that it must do something with either the twist of forearm or upper arm (shoulder?). I say this because I will have a mocap session where my pose looks great and "natural" to begin with, but over time the arm pose ends up twisting to where the palms are essentially pointing backwards, ape-like - like if you rolled your shoulders inward and twisted your arms a bit inward too (does that make sense?) My actor is clearly not doing this, but somehow iPi tracks some of the motion to interpret the pose like that. In the end, yes, I end up having to "fix" the exported BVH in my animation program by offsetting those sections where the arm twists awkwardly. But I'd really like to get it right (if I can) at the source. |

Ah, I think I understand what you mean. I don't think I've seen this behavior with the PS3 Eye system but I'll do more Kinect tests this week and compare. Let you know what I learn. G. |

All you have to do is assume T pose and then lower your arms to your side. The DMC character has palms facing down so lowering arms should have palms to thighs. What appears to happen is that the shoulders rotate so you end up with palms to the rear. It seems like an error with the software because that's a very simple change from one state to another with a rotation in one plane only. |

Ah, okay; that might be why I haven't noticed the 'palms out' problem. I tend to drop my arms and go into a relaxed pose before doing the actual performance (PS3 Eye or Kinect.) I've been very busy at work again so haven't had nearly as much time for the mocap project. I should be back on the project this weekend though, and I'll try to do more Kinect testing. Let you know how it goes. G. |

yes likewise and I think it's only a Kinect issue too but I haven't got the PS3's out to compare yet because the Kinect is just so damn convenient! :) |
