Hi,

I have the demo version of ipisoft. Some of the work I've seen from people is amazing and has got me really interested in motion capture as a whole.

I have the following:

4 Playstation Cameras
4 USB 2 Ext Leads (5m)
i7 920 Intel
6 gb ram
ATI hd5670 1gig
windows 7 x64

My Issue:

When I load the recorder program with the 4 cameras I instantly start dropping frames in 640x480 60fps. If I change the res down 320x240 it works fine no loss in frames. All of this is happening before I press record.

I have the latest usb 2 drivers for my motherboard. I also made sure my bios is set to usb 2 (high speed). All the ports on my motherboard are usb2, so theres no worries about putting it into the wrong port.

If I load the recorder program up with 2 Playstation webcams it works in 640x480 fine.

Is there anything major I need to do to fix this problem?

Is this a laptop? It's possible that even though you have four USB ports, you may actually have only one USB controller in your computer, especially if it's a small laptop. A single USB controller can support only two PS3 Eye cameras, which sounds like what's happening here. You can check for how many actual controllers you have in your computer by looking in Device Manager. This is important: do not confuse the USB controller with ports and hubs; just because you have multiple ports does not mean you have multiple controllers. I think there is a wiki entry on determining how many controllers you computer has...refer to that page.

If you have a desktop computer, then you probably have at least two controllers, which is good but you may need to figure out which ports they're controlling. Try different port combinations. Typically, the front USB ports are controlled by one controller and the rear ones are controlled by the other. If your desktop has only one controller (which might be unusual,) then you will need to add a controller card.

Of course, if you have other devices using USB ports (i.e., an external drive,) it may suck up your needed video bandwidth. In that case, you will need to add an additional controller card. (Note: USB keyboard and mouse is fine, these devices should not have much impact on video bandwidth.)

Final note: frame rate is much more important than resolution. If you can't get 640 x 480 to work with four cameras, try half res at full speed and enable compression.
