Howdy folks,

I have a iPiSoft customer here that is having troubles recording depth movies.

His graphics card is ok..

However he is using both usb 3 and usb 2, is that allowed?

As reference here are his system spec

Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 DUO CPU
E8000 @ 3.00 ghz
4 gb Ram
32 bit Operating System (Vista, srvice Pack 2)
NVIDIA GeFoce 8800 GT (which processes avi movies in the ipisoft studo at 1.2 seconds)
Backup hard drive for recording Seagate SATA rotation speed 7200
USB 3.0 Renesas Host controller

I have really tried getting the ipisoft recorder to work.... i am very close but I am not quite there...


I added a new backup drive to my system yesterday to improve recording speed (F: Drive)....the drives is an internal seagate SATA Drive with a rotation speed of 7200
I have two kinect cameras (one attached to the 2.0 USB port of the computer and the other attached to the recently installed 3.0 USB pci express host controller card)
On starting the ipisoft recorder I am getting steady frame rates from the 2 kinect cameras... 30 fps
Once I hit the record button my 3.0 USB camera typically flashes and then I record ok for a few seconds but then the camera becomes problematic with frames ranging between 17 and 26...I have the red warning text
I have tried nearly every comination of USB port configuration with the two cameras... the problem appears to be consistently with the 3.0 USB port camera not recording fast enough
I am running out of ideas, however, I thought I would try a replacement for my 3.0 USB pci express card...everytime when I connect a camera, I am getting multiple bongs which is a typical for usb conneccting

This probably doesn't help but FWIW I use both a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 controller for twin Kinects, so mixing the two possible. Normally, plugging a Kinect into a USB 3.0 controller will just make the controller act like a USB 2.0 controller.

I think there was an issue with a certain chipset used in some USB 3.0 controllers. Sorry, I don't have any more info than that. A search in these forums might turn up more info.

FYI, I checked what chipset my USB 3.0 card has. The card is made by Western Digital and the chipset it uses is NEC, so at least we know NEC works.

I know Windows 7 has a very useful Resource Monitor found in the Performance tab of the Task Manager. I'm not sure if Vista has the same advanced Resource Monitor, but either way you should try and confirm that there is no CPU or HDD bottleneck. Even older versions of Windows (such as XP) also have some of the same information (CPU and Page File usage) in the Performance tab of the Task Manager. Seems like something worth double checking.

I want to thank you for responding.

On the surface it looks like my system should be able to handle the ipisoft recording requirements. Also, when I processed and existing kinect movie my process time was 1.2 to 1.6 seconds/frame. However, when I attempt to capture video with two kinects my second camera plugged into the 3.0 USB port (PCi express controller card) the frame rates drops drops below an acceptable rate.

Here’s what I’ve done to attempt to diagnosis the problem:

• I moved the 3.0 USB pci card to a different slot (no joy)
• I checked that the gigaware card uses the ipisoft approved NEC 3.0 chipset, and it does
• Turned off all a services under my task manager to include the task manager (although I am not sure I have completely shut down MacAfee)
• Downloaded the Latency Detector and turned of individual drivers for other components, but I was unable to see where a conflict might exist.
• The only unexplained problem was the my that my PCI Bus under System Devices showed a memory range conflict between CFF00000 – FEBFFFFF and not available

Subsequently, I have become a little discouraged.

Hmm. To me it sounds like DMC should be working fine on your system. Hopefully somebody from iPi will jump in with more ideas.

The one possible bottleneck I see is your capture drive; a SATA 7200 drive is fine for a single Kinect but I'm not sure if it can handle two streams of Kinect data simultaneously. Remember that Kinect data is heavier than standard video since it includes both depth and RBG video data. Have you tried disabling the RGB streams?

Alternatively, you could try an SSD or RAID. I use this SSD made by Corsair which I have dedicated for iPi Recorder capture and it works flawlessly for dual Kinect and mutiple PS3 cameras. This model has been long discontinued but I imagine newer models are cheaper and more efficient.

FWIW, you really should not have to shut down any items in task manager...for me, it's been literally plug-and-play and I'm not running with an especially lean or clean system so, apart from the capture drive, I'm not sure what could be going on there.
