I uninstalled the PrimeSense drivers and installed the MS SDK ones yesterday for use with my deal Kinect setup. I also updated to the latest point release of Ipi Recorder and DMC. For some reason I am now seeing a LOT less distance in the range of my depth data than before. Previosuly I used to get depth info to almost 20 feet away from each camera (albeit a bit noisy), but now the depth cloud is cutting out at right around 10 feet. Is this a known issue? My motions are usually quite large volume actions so I may have to revert back to PrimeSense for now unless there is a way to adjust this with the SDK drivers.

Thanks,
Mitch

I'd be interested to know if there is a difference between the two. Last tests I did with two kinects, i was getting bout 10 feet or so with the microsoft drivers, if I can switch to Primesense and get 20....that'd be awesome.

I have some very similar moves captured both before and after the driver change. I will compare them tonight and post screenshots.

Hello, mitchfx.
Here is the answer you got by email regarding this question (with minor corrections):
Quote:
This is known issue with Kinect SDK 1.5. This issue has been fixed in Kinect SDK 1.6.
Also please note that for distances more than 4 meters (13 feet) the accuracy of depth data becomes extremely low. Thus it's not practical to shoot motions at a greater distance. In iPi Recorder it's denoted by the red color in a depth map.
If you need big capture volume, then PS Eye based solution is more practical.

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply. I will download and install the 1.6 SDK and try. As far as accuracy beyond 10 feet I totally understand, but the truth is I was using the exact same setup and camera positions for months with Ipisoft and getting great results. As soon as I switched to the 1.5 SDK I started having major problems due to the depth data being non-existent in certain areas where the cameras don't quite overlap. When I compare depth color in two projects (one with Primesense, other with SDK 1.5) I am also noticing that not only does the depth cut off but also the color changes from purple (to empty for SDK and to red in Prime) a couple of feet closer to the camera. Not sure if this means anything.

Cheers,
Mitch
