What's your view on the feasibility on the following (high-school) project idea? We want to use MOCAP STUDIO + BIOMECH ADD-ON for processing and biomechanics analysis of a pole vault. Of course the final phase when the athlete, my 17-year old son ;-) jumps over the pole. We plan to use 4 action cameras for recording this action outdoor. I estimate that the capture area is roughly 7 x 7 meters and the duration of the final jump phase is about 1-2 seconds only.

Attached is a 2sec video clip of my son reaching 4m50 earlier this year winning the nation U18 competition in Switzerland.

Hi,
we never tried pole vault tracking but I think it should work.
Recommendations:
- Record in cloudy weather on in the evening. Direct sunlight makes lighting very uneven and cause tracking issues.
- You'd better use 6 cameras (Basic configuration supports up to 6 cameras and more views would improve tracking)
- Record at high fps (120+ if your cameras support this).

Your setup is rather difficult due to complicated motion and outdoor capture. So I would recommend to try using the system in-house for simpler motions first to get known with the system.

Dear iPiSoft team,

thanks for your recommendations. We plan the recording only next year and haven't bought any cameras yet. I will study the various models of action cams to find one which supports such high 120 fps at 720p.

Pole vault would be our first choice but we would probably start with other disciplines such as high or long jump where the capturing of the motions is probably less demanding.

I will discuss this with my son and his trainer. Anyway it's his school project.
