After a lot of bringing back to life, my second hand first gen perception neuron suit finally died for good and im up for a new solution.(being that the basic or pro ver)

Watched and read for few days videos of ipisoftware and the iPi Docs (which are good, but confusing in some areas).If someone has the time and serious patience, i really need some chewed up info in order to speed up my situation.

I loud like to get the best quality I can so from what I read, the solution is either the ps3 cameras or action cameras.Let me see if I understood this correctly as im lost with the documentation or just a overheating problem from work and cant see the simple things right now:

Ps3 cameras:
If i select 6 cameras or more i have to be careful of how many controllers I have,correct? The number of free usb ports is not the same as controllers.(i currently have 4 or 5 3.0 free and one 2.0.No idea how many controllers that is.
The solution is a pcie card with 4 controllers as advertised OR purchase a big usb hub?? I saw this usb hub >Atolla Hub USB 3.0 with 7 slots

Can this be a solution for 6 ps3 cameras at once? No idea if that this is with 7 controllers.My imagination tells me that i plug it in to the wall current, plug the cameras all together at once, and the single usb cable that comes out of the usb hub goes in to the pc and done??



Action cameras:
If I understood correctly, for things like go pro, i don't need a pc connection.Just take the go pros with their stands to where I want to go, do the big circle positioning of the cameras, set all the cameras to have the same resolution,fps and no auto focus and auto zoom.....aaaand possibly have something like a remote control that will activate all cameras to record at once and stop recording?

Than i transfer the videos from each cd card to the pc, rename them to video 1,video 2, video 3 etc. and import them in to ipisoftware to convert the video to the correct format and automatically create the cameras from the imported videos?


Did I got all that info correctly? If someone thinks I mad major mistakes, please go point by point.

An USB hub doesn't add new USB controllers. It's sole purpose is to split a single USB port into multiple ones. Indeed it can allow to connect several cameras to a single USB port on a PC. But it won't handle more cameras than an USB controller to which a PC's USB port is wired.
As for PS Eye cameras, they are an USB 2.0 devices, and their behavior with different USB 3.0 controllers varies. You're right, a rule of thumb is 1 controller per 2 cameras (to get full 60 fps) but we saw modern laptops with a single USB 3.0 (Intel) controller can handle 4 cameras.

So actually, you won't find out exactly how many cameras your PC can handle until you try. Adding a PCIe USB card for sure adds at least 2 cameras (depending on the number of onboard controllers).

GoPros do not require a connection to PC - that's correct.
Note that assembling individual records into a single multi-camera recording for processing can be time consuming. As well as processing of high-res and high-fps videos.
Also, you have to do a self-calibration of each camera (once) so the software can compensate for image distortion.

Thank you.In the case of the ps3 cameras,i see people doing it on youtube but i cant quite get too see the setup.Are they using like 5-10 meter usb male to female(i think were called) cables for each camera on a tripod, that comes out of the pc?

Yes, when connecting all cameras to a single PC, you will definitely need USB extension cables.

Prefer USB 2.0 cables for PS Eyes. And select in the mid to high price range because the cheapest ones may provide you more troubles than help.
