I have a basic 3-camera setup in my garage now, and have gotten the calibration to work and some slower-motion tracking that seems to work (at 30fps capture). I'm definitely impressed with what you've accomplished with this level of hardware! My garage is probably a very non-ideal environment: lots of background detail and bare 4-ft fluorescent tubes that are visible to the cameras and can be occluded by the actor. I plan on hanging some green sheets to reduce the background complexity. On the lights, would it be helpful to get the lights out of the camera view? The software makes me pretty happy. It feels a bit rough, but I was able to get started quickly and I didn't have to hunt long for anything. My one nitpick is that the camera positions should stay the same when you load a new recording. It's easy to lose your calibration data before you're familiar with the work-flow, which is a bit of a frustrating way to start! |

I currently shooting in my garage too. The space has two overhead fluorescent light, but I'm also using three soft boxes that I try to keep out of view. The scene does not need to be well-lit by artistic standards, but you do need to minimize dark cast shadows on the performer and the floor. This is what I'm using the softboxes for, but if you don't have additional lights, you might try large white boards (like foam core maybe,) to bounce light off the floor and reduce shadows. Another option: if it's daytime, open the garage door to let natural day light bounce in. (This assumes the cameras are all facing inside and looking away from the garage door of course.) I'm using a solid backdrop to cover things on the walls. It's a chromakey screen, but I don't think the color matters much so long as the performer has good contrast against it. You can get very large muslin backdrops from photography supply stores, and if you shop around you may find them a lot cheaper than bed sheets. G |
