Ok, so Im getting into giving this whole thing a first test run... to start with Im just monkeying around with the recorder before getting into tracking, and there ve hit the first stumbling block.

So, as the title says, Im using a Kinect here... also am capturing on my laptop atm.

Problem Im getting is that I cant get more than about 20- secs of recording before the buffer flatlines and recording stops. Now the recording window says datarate is 26MB/s... Ive benchmarked the internal harddisk (I assume regular 5600rpm) which seems (according to that bm) to give around 60MB/s... and also tried with an external HDD (which is a 7200 rpm drive) on firewire which the benchmark reports 90MB/s for... but this drive doesn't work either... goes for slightly longer, but not MUCH longer at all... 10 secs most.

So... any hints?

Ok, well done some further testing.

Hooked the whole thing up to one of my desktop machines, and recording works fine using any of my internal drives, either the older 7200 iIDE ones, or ofc the sata 10K one (raptor). I guess it must just be something related to laptop construction that bogs it down. It would be nice to do it on laptop, cos, at least as far as the recording part goes, Im looking for a more portable solution (I plan to do my recordings in a theatre cross town as I can get more space). Maybe I'll swap out my laptops internal drive for something faster at some point, see if that makes a difference... but still if push comes to shove I can always hoik my desktop around I suppose.

Next I guess is to pick up a few ps3 cams and see what results I get with those... then once Ive gotten the recording setup sorted, I can move onto trying the tracking out.

I'll drop notes as I go incase any others find it of any help.

I recommend that you check if you have the right drivers for Kinect. If you had some old Kinect or LibUSB drivers installed before installing iPiRecorder this could be the source of the problem. In that case, removing iPiRecorder, then removing old drivers and re-installing iPiRecorder should help.

Another possibility is interference from Bluetooth drivers on a notebook. Disabling Bluetooth during recording may help.

It is also possible that your notebook file system is seriously fragmented. Try defragmenting the hard drive.
