Post subject:  Problems with target biped proportions

Hi,

I'm having difficulties applying my iPi mocap data to my short biped character. The character's proportions are something similar to that of a smurf. When I apply the BVH file to my biped the character simply floats around the stage (following the trajectories of the mocap actor). Is there any package out there or process I can apply that will correctly translate the human biped proportions down to that of my short proportioned character? I tested the character with the Mixamo application on line and the human proportions work fine so I know it can be done.

iPi has very good retargeting built in but it would be cool to see some basic motion editing tools included in future updates.

Currently, I like to use Motion Builder for editing mocap for 'cartoon proportioned' characters. You can see the results in my short film (link below) and the Kinect test videos for the film (dual Kinect and single Kinect). After retargeting, depending on what the character is doing, you may still need to correct the motion. For example, because my characters have huge heads, it's easy for limbs to penetrate the head when the performer raises his arms. Fortunately, this sort of thing is easy to correct using MB.

A license for MB may be more than you want to spend but there are some good inexpensive alternatives.

One interesting web-based solution is Webanimate by Ikinema. I think it's free to use and you pay only when you want to export something. I haven't used this service but a few users here have reported getting good results from it.

Another alternative is Jimmy|Rig Pro from Origami Digital, which is a standalone program that can do a lot of the most common motion editing tasks very easily. It's currently in beta testing but if you have Jimmy|Rig Lite, you can use the beta until it's released.

Hope this helps.
