Post subject:  Sending Motionbuilder bvh into motion builder 2012

I am just migrating from Poser 2012 (gosh hard work with little rewards at the moment, so slow and creates so many problems - I guess I mostly to blame due to my non knowledge) to motionbuilder 2012.

The problem I am having is that I make the bvh in ipisoft. Export it as a motion builder bvh. I go through the performance of making the character rig which works fine. I use mia characterized (as I am a newbie to MB). I am following the MotionBuilder Speed Tutorial (Basic Parts 1 -8) videos on youtube. When | make a control rig for mia, she goes odd and the upper body does not follow properly. When I try with the free bvh's of the internet, there does not seem to be a problem.

The question is:
What am I doing wrong?
Does anyone out know of a tutorial which will help to import and rig up a character from ipisoft into motionbuilder.

If you are using Mia, and iPiSoft bvh, you probably dont need to do any characterising assignments manually.
That is if the Mia you are using is by default characterised.

Try dropping the Character asset straight on to your bvh, not next to it, to automatically characterise your animation.

From there its a matter of driving the Mia character from your bvh.

Sorry I know that probably all sounds over simplified, but if you isolate exactly what parts not working we might be able to help.
Try the pipeline with the already characterised Mia and let us know how that goes?

Hi, Thanks for the idea. But unfortunately I do not understand, I only starting using a few days ago. I was following the you tube tutorials, so therefore I do not know any other ways of doing it. I guess in a few months I will understand your comments ( I am very newbie with this).

I assumed you had to first asset a character to the bvh, and then Mia to the character.

It would be good if you could assign the bvh straight to Mia, or maybe it is possible I do not know.

How do I assign to Mia, is it possible to do the characterization automatically?

Try this. I do have an older version of MB
New scene>
Set up your favorite paths in asset browser (rightclick)
Drop in your bvh ( fbx open, include default iPiSoft take)
From the Templates/Characters folder, drop a character onto your skeleton
Characterize/Biped
Select you character in the navigator view, and select "Control Rig Output" >FK/IK
You need to make it active by checking box in Character Settings or Character controls
rename your character
Save as
(I notice reloading this file, Motionbuilder breaks here, and I have to select "control rig input", then "control rig output" again to make it remember what to do properly)

end*

Option1
Drop Mia into the same scene(FBX merge no animation)
Select Mia in Character controls or navigator
In Character Settings window, make her input 'Character Input" and choose your iPi Character
I notice Motionbuilder seems to break the iPi animation> Control rig Output pipeline here. You have to select your original iPi animation, which in my case has reverted to "Stance Input" and uncheck the active box.
Press Play, and you should have transferred your animation.

I cannot seem to get Mobu to go iPiAnimation> Control Rig> Control Rig Mia> Mia Character so if anyone else can advise on that that would be helpful. My pipeline above seems to leave behind a spare control rig. Sometimes I can't tell if its me or motionbuilder with weird quirks.

Option2
Create new scene
Drop Mia in from Wherever you installed the ClipArt content
In Character controls window, select Mia from the Character dropdown
Next to that go File>Load Character animation>and choose your previously characterised mocap

in the Load Character animation Options, select "Plot to control Rig"

That should also work

I hope thats some use, and would love feedback from experienced Mobu users as I am a learner myself.

Cheers.

The ipisoft BVH works perfect in MB, Mia does the stuff well. Very happy with it.
I managed to put in the gremlin and Pepe easily too.

The solution to your problem may be in this video (maybe, just quessing), it shows how to get multiple models doing the same thing. Hope it helps :0)

If you're just starting out with Motion Builder, I highly recommend watching the free videos at 3D Buzz. The version of MB they use in most of the videos is old but the information is completely valid and essential for today. For the most complete list of their MB videos, go to their YouTube channel, click Videos and Playlist, and then select the Motion Builder Playlist.

Digital Tutors has a few good MB courses too. This is a monthly subscription service so if you also need to brush up on other topics (Maya, ZBrush, whatever,) it's a very good deal. You can suspend your subscription when you're done and reactivate for another month when you're ready for more training.

Just curious but since you are no longer using Poser, what's your final destination for the data? Most users use MB as an intermediary for another 3D program. For us, our iPi DMC/MB data is exported to Lightwave for our short films, and towards the end of the year we will be exporting iPi Data/MB data for a game engine project.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress! :)

Hi all,
After a few months looking and investing options, I have come to the decision to take up knitting (just a joke).

Arron C could you do a video of what you are describing for ipisoft bvh into MB (please if you have the time - would be well appreciated).

I have been struggling with Poser 2012, but still problems, I think it is down to my lack of knowledge and not enough information out there. But still I solider on,

It would be great to learn lightwave, as I have marvelous designer 2 for making clothes, and its export is .MDD.

I am a bit frustrated as a part of my life I am a Tai Chi player. I would like to turn myself into an avatar.

Still a way to go :)

Any help along the way would be most appreciated.
