| Post subject: | 6PS eye cameras: requirements for the PC |
Hi, I'm a new user and I have a slightly different issue to most in that I want to record simultaneously from 6 cameras but I do NOT need to reconstruct motion: we're doing an experiment with ants going along a 9 m long channel, so I'll have a separate camera for each 1.5 m. I can see we only need the iPi recorder (which is fantastic) but we're going to buy a PC (or laptop) and I wondered if there were any requirements that we would need. I can see we should be fine with 6 USB ports but I've also seen posts on the graphics cards needed (for GPU acceleration) but not sure if we need this for just the recording?Or is there a different card we should get to make sure the PC is able to capture video from all 6 cameras? many thanks and apologies if this question has already been answered (I've had a look but I may not have searched for the correct things). You do not need GPU for recording. Please find detailed system requirements at the bottom of this page (you need only Recording section): http://ipisoft.com/software/standard-edition/ Please be careful with USB. You need 3 USB controllers inside. 6 ports may sit on only 2 controllers. Please find how to check this in this article: http://wiki.ipisoft.com/USB_controllers |

| Post subject: | Number of USB controllers in a Dell Optiplex |
Thanks very much for your response: that's really useful. We've identified a pc to get: the Dell OptiPlex 9020 Small Form Factor which has more than 6 USBs and has both USB 2 and USB 3. Their spec sheet says it has: "4 External USB 3.0 ports (2 side, 2 rear) and 4 External USB 2.0 ports;" But doesn't say what chipsets they are. Does anyone know if it has separate controllers for the USB 2 and USB 3? I've contacted the Dell help/support people but they say they don't know; it was difficult enough to get the number of USB ports! And would 2 ports per USB type be typical Any information very gratefully received. Andy |
