That's correct...well, sort of.

The PS Move and JoyCon controllers doesn't depend on the camera/sensor devices to capture rotation data.

However, you do need the cameras/sensors to capture data for the basic skeleton motions, which stops at the neck and wrists. The extras controller data enhances the body motion by adding the rotation data to the head and hand bones.

BTW, you can apply the controller data to a prop to give it rotation (like a sword, rifle, or just a box.) The prop will need to be parented to a part of the body (i.e., a hand bone) to give it positional animation.

Correction: there is an option to track head rotation without motion controllers both with RGB and depth cameras.
However, using motion controller for head rotation has advantages of:
  • Producing more accurate result (usually)
  • Not slowing down the tracking speed (tracking head with cameras ~ doubles tracking time)

Thanks for catching that! I knew about the feature but neglected to mention it. :)

Whoops! Looks like I had posted this earlier. The blue helmet pictured pictured a few posts above is my new helmet rig.

And, yes, this one works very well. The new helmet was pretty cheap too...I think it was about $15.
