You can see camera configurations comparisons around the forum. Here is a couple of examples:

I don't know any other mocap solution employing PS Eye cameras.
With Kinect there are several options, but I hardly can remember any supporting multiple Kinects besides our software.
Which is the best? It depends on what you mean by "the best" - the most accurate, the most inexpensive, having realtime etc.
Anyway, as I am in the iPi Soft team, you can't expect I will recommend any competing product :) Maybe, our users will share some opinions on this subject.

I have both systems but currently use dual Kinect for almost everything I need. Dual Kinect is much easier to setup and use, and doesn't require as much space. That said, the capture space with PS3 Eye cameras can be much larger when you need it to be.

The cost for either system is very low compared to 'high end' gear used by large studios.

If you're comparing it to other Kinect based systems, there is no real comparison because, AFAIK, no other developer currently offers a dual Kinect system. It would be more fair to compare the single Kinect iPi Express to these other system in price but for quality I would lean towards iPi because of the way its tracking system works--it may not be realtime but it's more precise than any of the current realtime systems. But some users may prefer realtime performance over accuracy.

If you're comparing the cost of six Eye cameras to two Kinects, it's probably about the same. (I think a single Eye camera is about $30 and a single XBox Kinect is about $100) Plus, you need to consider the cost of accessories. For example, PS3 Eye cameras require more cables, clothing, a Maglite, and possibly special lighting requirements.

As for quality, six PS3 Eyes is technically better than two Kinects. But dual Kinect is quite good too. The quality between four PS3 Eyes and dual Kienct is supposed to be about the same.

If you decide to go with Kinect for Windows devices, it's at least twice the cost of Kinect for XBox but you get a few more options over Kinect for XBox. It's been hinted that the advantages with Kinect for Windows may continue to grow over time but nothing's been officially announced yet. Kinect for Windows does have other uses outside of iPi Soft products--some 3D scanning and face capture programs will only work with the Windows version.

What you need to do before purchasing is consider how you intend to use the system. For the type for short films we have been making, the dual Kinect option has been ideal but, then, our needs may not be the same as yours.

The price of PS3 cameras is really low now, at least here in Finland - only 9.20€ which is about $12 or £7.50. They used to cost more even when we bought them secondhand. The retail price for new ones used to be almost 40 euros...

Wow, that's a fantastic price!

I checked on Amazon in the US and they're still around $30 here. I'm sure you can find it cheaper if you really shopped around but even then, you will probably want to add at one to two good quality repeater cables which may add another $12 to $25 per camera, which will more or less even the costs again. Overall, I found that needed to purchase more accessories for PS3 Eye than I did for Kinect.

That said, in my opinion, when the total cost for either system is so low compared to the next pro-level mocap system (probably Optitrack starting at $6800,) I feel the difference of a few dollars becomes a less significant matter. If you decide to go with the iPi DMC, I think it's more important to consider the technical differences between each system--what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Which system will produce best quality for the motions you need and which will work best in your environment? If the system you choose isn't the most efficient for your situation, you may lose more than a few dollars in lost time.

I grabbed 4 used ps3 cameras from gamestop here in the US for 13.50 each. They are working quite well, even the one that smelled like an ashtray.

Used from Gamestop online I believe is about 15 USD.
