PS Eye is a pretty cheap cam - less than $20 on Amazon.
Technically, any web cam with DirectShow driver is supported. However, most (especially cheap) web cams do not provide such a stable and high frame rate as PS Eye do. That is why we do recommend PS Eye for using with our software.

Kinect (and likes) is not as cheap (though you need less of them), but is more convenient in using - easy setup, simple calibration, faster processing.

There is no straightforward answer to this. Here you can find the comparison of dual Kinect vs multiple PS Eye configurations:

Quick answer: Kinect is more convenient to set up and a lot easier to use but it's not as accurate as PS3 Eye and the capture space is smaller.

That's changed a bit with the most recent update, which now allows you to use three Kinects. According to the docs, the triple Kinect configuration is about as accurate as capturing with six PS3 Eye cameras. The capture space is still much smaller though.

FWIW, I prefer using Kinect because it's so easy and I need to work quickly, but I keep PS3 on 'stand-by' in case I need to capture larger motions.

I haven't tried the triple setup yet but will do so very soon because we may have some contract work coming up next month that can make use of this configuration.
